A little bit of history and worth your time to read. Prior to start of WW2 most branches of US Military woefully underataffed and badly equipted. Navy was not exception. Some very bright and forward thinking men developed the Fletcher Class US Navy Destroyers in the mid to late 1930's. The USS Fletcher DD-445 was first to have her keel laid down, hence; class name. The USS Nicholas was the first to be comissioned in June 1942. Nicholas sister ship was USS O'Bannon DD-450 which is pictured with Nick and carrier. Both these small vessels were the most highly decorated ships in WW2. Their heroics will never be duplicated. The Nicholas was and remains to this day the fastest ship in the US Navy. On the open sea with all four boilers lit she could steam for 6-8 hours at flank speed of plus 37 knots which translates into 43-46MPH. That's speed!!!!

When the Japanese surrendered Admiral Halsey ordered the Nicholas to accompany his flag ship USS Missouri into Tokyo Bay. One very small destroyer along side on very big battleship!! So the Nicholas served from 1942-1971!! In her career she had under gone many retro fits, equipment up-grades and rebuilds. But alas age does creep into all things. She and most of her sister ships were scrapped and turned into razor blades. SAD!! The older gentleman is Captain David E. Cummins who servered 37 years in USN. He was in 11 ships for more than 22 years at sea. USS Nicholas DD-449 is the "ONLY SHIP ON HIS WALL OF MEMORIES"!!! He was skipper from 1961-1964 and the best damn Captain in the Navy. Yesterday i had a great day. But then i did what i do best i ruined a good friendship because my feelings towards this person got the best of me. It happens every damn time i'm friends with a girl. June 14, 2006 WASHINGTON – Making sure the State Veterans Home in Yountville remains a comfortable residence for veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is targeting more than $807,000 in grant money for improvements to the state home. "This grant honors our commitment to care for the men and women of California who have served in uniform," said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. "Our federal-state partnership helps to provide comfortable housing for California veterans." Vacation Update
well the trip up here took a little longer than expected. What was suppose to be an easy trip got a little slow and hectic when we reached the San Fransico area, Rain lots and lots of rain. As we got up to the California Oregon border the temparture dropped from around 41 to the low 20s. Ice from the beginning of the Sisquo Foothills on. My father not being use to the snow meant i had to put on the chains. Tighten them and then drive. After we got out of it and finally made it to my grandparents and hung out with them at their new house i came to one conclusion about life. I can look at my mother and father and my grand parents and my cousin who just recently got married and see that there isnt a happiness like that of a couple in love. The kind of love that can make you stay together for so long through thick and thin. Seeing that in others really makes you want it for yourself. Then you begin to wonder why you arent married? Vacation Is Over
Well til sunday then it's back to work...I had a great time hanging with my good friend..posted some pics not all of em bc there are too many stalkers out there...I guess thats what ya get when your a rockstar lol. Well, the time has finally gotten here. I didnt think it ever would. Mike is flying in saturday morning and then on sunday morning december 17th we will be leaving for a three week vacation. Going to spend the holidays in the mountains. I cant wait, going to be a white christmas. On jan 2 we will be packing up and heading back to texas. Mike is finally moving down here. So, lately I've been thinking about taking a vaction to Korea and see my grandfather. My mom just recently got back from Korea and said that he's not doing well. Let me see if I understand this correctly, a vacation is something you do to relax and get away from the stress and strain of everyday life. I have such high hopes for this trip. All my friends are telling me to go and live it up and just relax, so that is what I plan to do. (Yea right!) We pile into the car, my boss, her sons, 2 of them, her daughter, me and my son. Thank god this is a big Durango we are in.
