-To me anyway, is the "slump in gas demands" as gas goes down $4/barrel a day when we put the whole thing in context of new presidential candidates, firing oil speculators, and offshore/alaskan drilling the price of gas goes down.
Here's what really happened.
We got fed up. They hit the line in the sand, and politicians and the media (more likely than anything it was media) shook the bush and scared out the gigantic conglomerates. They'll do anything to take attention AWAY from their presence, so they gave us what we wanted.
Price cuts.
Now, let's all go out and google the actual yearly cost of electric cars, average speeds and overall performance, and the gas conglomerates common ties both vaguely business (including major automotive developers) and ancestral (like... the Bush family tree hob knobbing with the sheiks).

I'm not saying there's a secret organization that rules the government or anything
but I am saying
the 6 major oil conglomerates, the land owning sheiks, and the governments behind them (including members of our own)
all sleep in the
same
fucking
bed.
What they really know- is this is the information age. We'll learn what we need to, and enough informed consumers, and enough informed investors
will be the end of them
they're milking this FORTUNE they're making in the last couple years for all its worth because their end is
INNEVITABLE
we don't NEED alternative fuel/energy sources, we're DEVELOPING them, they smell the galley burning, and they're getting the hell off the ship while they can.
This generation of tech is dieing, and they know it.
They'll invest in the future techs, and continue to fuck us- but that's not the point
neither is another fun trend

We accelerated the militarization of SEVERAL industrializing nations by doing this.

Their military folded from infighting and budget cuts, there were armed insurrections and revolutions everywhere, territories were lost, rapidly, and now Russia's a world power PUNCHLINE.

Because our government is too micromanaged and directionless, and corrupt. One man will make a fortune selling arms we would gladly burn down or GIVE to our allies, but instead he turns a profit, and puts fully functioning and superior to sharpened sticks weaponry in the hands of the world that hates us. They're relying on their anonymity of a bloated government, and corrupt higher up buddies to bail their asses out for the right price.

But I'd really rather see it happen as peacefully as possible.
We need to embrace the rest of the world, not threaten them.
That's the real way to ensure American safety and prosperity.
The age of militarism, cold war espionage and mistrust, and colonialism ushered in by the great Bourbon Cowboy, Roosevelt is over. We have no need to rule the world with a big stick in the nuclear age... especially when fucking EVERYONE has one. Let's rule with money and friendly neutrality instead.
