Today at work we again had Israeli food. We usually have food brought to us on Fridays. I was very impressed when I seen American Idol take part in UNICEF. They used Tuesday and Wednesday to Generate money for those in need and even went as far as taking the time to show their experiences in Africa and what they could do, simply by reaching out. My hands go together for the funds that they have raised already. $60 Million Dollars. And counting. I don't watch much TV at all, but when I learned that American Idol was going to be doing that kind of performance and just for what it represented I just knew that I had to watch, I was glad I did as well. It was final three week, with songs chosen by the judges, the producers, and the singers. Overall it was an above-average week, with only a few mis-steps, as you might expect at this stage of the game. I'll break down all nine performances, starting with Judge's Choice:Jordin, "Wishing On A Star" (Simon) -- This was a decent peformance, but not one of her best. I'd put it in the middle of the pack for the night, while acknowledging that it would have been near the top in almost any other week.Blake, "Roxanne" (Paula) -- Paula didn't do Blake any favors with this one; as I've said before, it's very difficult to do The Police well. She may have been thinking that the Police's reggae-inflected rhythms would fit Blake's style, and that may be true, but if that's what she was going for he should have sung "Shadows In The Rain" or "The Bed's Too Big Without You." After a big surprize last Wednesday night we learnt that no one was going to be packing their bags and leaving the American Idol circus. So instead, the pressure is really on this week because we're losing two people. Tonight should stretch some of these contestants, if not all of them, because tonight we have a bit of a rock thing going on which should put our Idols very much out of their comfort zones. Well, last night's American Idol wasn't the best. There were moments of greatness, but I just wasn't very impressed with any of the performances.I did not like Blake's renditions at all -- it's almost like he's just using gimicks (the beat boxing) to stand out and not doing much singing. So, I'll be ready for him to go tonight. Semifinals ResultsMelinda Doolittle was my favorite.She was Simon Cowell's favorite.Both of us can't be wrong!But evidently, the voting viewers of "American Idol" have other ideas. It's hard to call it this week -- I'm not sure who will be going home from American Idol. But I think the following are at risk: Haley, Stephanie Nelson, Sanjaya, Gina and Chris Sligh.Haley did a pretty good job, but girl -- please wear a bra next time. What a hard decision it was this week to pick someone to vote for. Why, at the Top 4 week, can't the contestants be singing songs and performing like their lives depended on it. I have to say that as soon as the home town visits were shown, I knew Melinda was going home. The crazy screaming fans for both Jordin and Blake were young, teenaged, and would vote a ton of times -- whereas the fans for Melinda were more reserved and not as demonstrative. I'm still shaking my head -- Melinda deserves to win American Idol on talent alone -- however I do think this will be a blessing for her -- to make her own record deal (probably tons better than the American Idol contract) -- and probably give her more freedom to go the direction she wants to go.At this point, I think Jordin will win. I feel a bit bad for her if she does, simply for the fact that she is so young, and I hope she won't give in to the pressure to become the "typical" teen star -- dressing too sexy, focusing too much on fame, etc. I worry about these young stars.I do think Blake has a chance to win -- with the young girls voting -- and I think he would do well as a winner or not. American Idol 2007 Episode 33 - Idol Gives Back
Tonight's episode is going to be an extravaganza. In fact, I imagine it is likely to rival the grand finale. There are going to be some very special guests including a wing man [woman] for Ryan in the form of this years Oscar presenter Ellen Degeneres. American Idol Songwriting Contest Songs Submitted
Say that 10x fast.This is bad...it's the 2nd time American Idol has appeared on GarageSpin in less than a month. But this time, it's about the American Idol Songwriting Contest; I felt compelled to after seeing the oh-so-cute Hugh in "Music and Lyrics" last night.The backstory: the American Idol winner traditionally records a new, professionally-written song after the competition is over. However, the song has traditionally sucked. So, American Idol decided to start the American Idol Songwriting Contest. Songwriters were to write a "journey-" or "quest-" theme song, follow a few simple songwriting contest rules, pay a $10 entry fee, and cross their fingers. Fans will vote on the 20 selected songs. Boom. Apparently, 25,000 entries were submitted (hey, that's $250,000). So, besides raking in a chunk of songwriting contest fees, by involving fans in the selection process, American Idol should also be able to sell quite a few copies of the winning idol single. Tonight American Idol performances were country. Martina McBride was the mentor for the American Idol contestants. She's one of my favorite country music stars. I recall a few years ago when she came to the Stadium of Fire in Provo -- one of my favorite celebrations (this year Brooks & Dunn will be headlining).I loved Martina's advice about connecting with the music and the lyrics. That's so important when it comes to great performances.Here are my notes from tonight:Phil Stacey -- I would have liked to see what he would have looked like with a cowboy hat tonight. So here are my thoughts about the American Idol Top 10.(First a note about Gwen Stephani: her stage persona seems to have nothing to do with the real Gwen. When she was interviewed and talking to the contestants, she seemed very down to earth, sweet, reserved and just darling. Simon Cowell made his preferences clear on Tuesday night. He wanted Jordin Sparks off and expected two finalists: Doolittle for her consistently excellent singing and Blake Lewis for his risk taking. I am guessing he thought those two had the best chance to make him money through record sales. American Gangster Is Just Real
This past weekend, I didn't check out the Bee Movie nor the other Santa Claus movie. Nope not these. I checked out American Gangster with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, and It was just as real as Scarface. Matter of fact, it was in my opinion, was one of the "realist" movies that came out in a while since New Jack City. In a nutshell, American Gangster is based on how Frank Lucas rose to power as one of Harlem's toughest kingpins between the late 1960's to the 1970's. He utilized the shipment of drugs from southeast Asia in place of caskets that containing American Soldiers from the Vietnam War, to distribute in his turf. He got away with for a least a decade, but likewise, there was trails of decet, treachory, anarchy, and of adding patterns of finding out who is the head distributor of bringing down the bosses and also the police officers whom seem to be working behind the scenes in order to capture Lucas. Last weekend I went to see American Gangster with Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe. Overall I thought it was a good movie, not a great one. It was probably apropos that a commercial for the Sopranos Video collection ran prior to the movie, as that was what it felt like, a 2 1/2 hour ep of the HBO series. Maybe its shows like that that desentize us to the violence so movies like American Gangster don't have the same impact that classic movies of this genre, like Casino, Goofellas, or the Godfather had when I saw them the first time. It will be a good rental down the line.

I remember growing up in grade and middle school being taught about dictators and facists deciding what is best for the people. Ok so I had flipped on the news by accident and they had an old news story up about how a whale had washed up on the beach dead in the 70's....It was starting to rot and the smell was horrendous. American Air cancels more flights The MD-80s had already been grounded two weeks ago American Airlines cancelled about 850 flights on Wednesday after it grounded its MD-80 aircraft to conduct extra safety inspections on wiring. The cancellations - more than a third of its schedule - came after almost 500 flights were scrapped on Tuesday. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) raised concerns about the wiring inspections two weeks ago. I know for myself this 4th of July was different from years past. I usually have my family over for a cookout and we have fireworks. This year though it didn't happen. I'm not sure why, but it didn't. I remember grumbling because it just "didn't seem like the 4th." It was a little disappointing. Even though I had 3 of my soldiers, my friend John, my kids and my husband with me..it just didn't seem like the 4th.I'm not sure how I managed to do it, but I overlooked what I had been doing July 1st, 2nd and 3rd. It had slipped my mind that over those three days I had brought home several HUNDRED soldiers from Iraq. I had helped reunite all these families, yet it hadn't occurred to me. It wasn't until the night of the 6th that it all hit me. I, along with my other volunteers are standing on the tarmac waiting for a plane to come in. Ok, So here is something elese for me to Rant and Bitch About!!! So at my daughters school the Janitor was taking down and putting up the American Flag with his dirty rubbr gloves on and bunching it up instead of folding it properly.
