theres a lot of claims that the first one is a hoax.. although even the articles supposedly 'debunking' the iq connection.. end up showing similar results.
how about we just use common sense though - the red states have an infamously poor educational system.. and anyone who's been 'down south' knows the truth -

i moved to arkansas for a year - we went back to simple addition.
