As the investigation into the crimes that took place at Burr Oak Cemetery continues to grow, so do the number of families who are affected.
And the First Family is among those touched by the awful situation, NBC Chicago has confirmed.
Michelle Obama's father, Fraser Robinson, is buried at Burr Oak. He was a city employee and Democratic precinct captain who died in 1990.
A spokesperson for the First Lady's office said they wouldn't comment any further, and we do not yet know if his grave was among the hundreds dug up by graveyard workers in a money-making scheme.
Thousands of families have been trying to check on the status of their loved ones' remains since word of the scandal broke last week. The Sheriff's Office has closed the entire cemetery, declaring it a crime scene, and is allowing people to place new requests only by phone at 1-800-942-1950 or e-mail burroakcemeteryinvestigation@gmail.com.
Also buried in the cemetery was Mya Lyons, a 9-year-old girl who was stabbed near her home last year. Her father, Richard Lyons, told the Sun-Times he's losing sleep wondering if she was put in a grave where someone else had been.
Lyons said that his family had previously asked that his grandmother be buried next to his grandfather's plot, but was told the cemetery was too full. But when Mya died, the spot had somehow become open again.
