Burr Oak Cemetery was closed Saturday, declared a crime scene by police.

But, like each day since the news that bodies had been dug up and their plots resold at the historic cemetery, hundreds of devastated families still came to find out if their loved ones resting place had been disturbed.

Investigators have turned their attention to a second section at Burr Oak, known as "Babyland," where most infants and children were buried. At least ten families said they could not find headstones for their children.

That's where Gail Cooper's 6-year-old daughter was buried 25 years ago.

"That was my baby," Cooper told the Sun-Times as she broke down in tears. "To think that maybe they took her and threw here over in the corner like she was a piece of trash. That disturbs me a lot."

Dart said they have not found bones in the area but that records for the area are a mess.

"The record-keeping here is outrageous, absolutely outrageous," Dart said.

Carolyn Towns, 49, who was the former manager at the cemetery, has been charged with managing the criminal enterprise of excavating 200 to 300 bodies, putting them in a "dump area" and reselling their cemetery for $300,000. She and staffers Keith Nicks, 45, Terrence Nicks, 39, all of Chicago, and Maurice Dailey, 59, of Robbins, all face up to 30 years in prison on charges of dismembering a human body.

Meanwhile, the court ordered excavation of Rachel Boone's grave began Saturday, with her heartbroken family watching has her body was removed from the spot she was laid to rest last February.

"We have confirmation from cemetery officials that there are two bodies buried in that plot,'' Brittney Blair, spokeswoman for Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, had said Saturday.

But after the exhumation, authorities found "no irregularities'' with the grave, according to Dart, saying Boone wasn't "double stacked'' on top of another grave.

The cemetery will be closed again Sunday. The sheriff's office will take burial information at Eisenhower High School at 127000 Sacramento Ave., in Blue Island. Family members can also call 800-942-1950 or email burroakcemeteryinvestigation@gmail.com.

So far, investigators have received 5000 phone calls, 1700 e-mails and they've talked to 700 families. That number is only expected to grow in the coming days and weeks.

"One of my fears is that I may never have closure, or peace to know where my family's bodies are," Jennifer Gyimah, who has about 40 relatives buried at Burr Oak, told the Chicago Tribune. "You think they're at rest. As a living human being, you feel you at least can give your relatives dignity in death. And now I feel that dignity has been shattered."
