Deep Listening...
I really should post this on my Twitter page but i'll probably run out of characters, so I'll just repost there. (If you're haven't joined my brand spankin' new Twitter page, do it if you'd like to constantly be annoyed by little thoughts, questions and updates from me.)
I've been meaning to do this simple post for awhile. Since some of you do actually ask, I wanted to share this specific musical part of my life. Here's something I've listened to for over a decade to help me drift into never-never land. (Mainly the track "Lear" on this album.) I linked to this page bc it has the description of how Pauline Oliveros and crew made this (along with "The Ready Made Boomerang") in an abandoned Cistern. It has always fascinated me - the concept of a space so large and reflective, that there is a natural 45 second reverb. (Of course, the obvious and first question I asked myself when i read this was " i wonder what a fart would sound like down there?")
I guess at this point it's ok to admit that I poorly tried to mimic something with this feel on the "Argyle Park" album I did in 1994 (the song "Uffern.") I cracked out my trombone from 2nd grade and had an old violin from the early 1900's my amazing Grandmother passed on to me. I tracked quite a bit of nonsense on my state of the art Fostex ADATs. Then I tracked some droning vocals and filled in gaps with various samples and synths. I discovered 2 very important things that day:
1. I can't play the trombone or violin to save my wretched soul.
2. An Alesis Midiverb doesn't remotely compare sonically to an empty, 2 million gallon-holdin' space.
It's simple math: 1+2 = FAIL
