Cousining

My cousin once-removed I. was born three years ago today. *cheers!!*

A sort of belated party

I celebrated my birthday with my family last month. Some friends wanted to celebrate it here, and I was glad to oblige, so we arranged to have a date for dinner and a movie. The movie was (the 2006) All the King's Men with Sean Penn, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Talia Balsam... etc.! :)... I don't live in Louisiana nor in the 1930s (though the novel, I believe, and certainly this film take place later on) so I can say nothing about accuracy... and I have seen at least part of an earlier version of the film-- but I liked this one, the cinematography the acting the script the drama the gestalt... a whole lot. I knew how it ended and I was still frightened (and the film's mainly about personalities, politics, and a very complicated character, impelled to enter politics by real outrage but also corrupt and in many ways no saint (so to speak) and very much a demagogue as well, a character based (with fictional license) on Huey Long (1893-1935)... Note: according to http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0405676/releaseinfo the film isn't out yet in the UK and a number of other countries. (Hasn't been getting great reviews from site users, either- pft! Tant pis.) Further edit: "Warren disassociated himself from the comparison, stating to interviewer Charles Bohner in 1964, "Willie Stark was not Huey Long. Willie was only himself, whatever that self turned out to be."" (from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huey_Long. Originally said "Lewis disassoc..." but Lewis died in 1951, didn't write the book, making it seem a bit unlikely he would have said anything about it, whereas Robert Penn Warren -did- write it and might have been interviewed about it... so... my mistake, I think!)

Birthdays

I notice several people joined with "January 1st" birthdays. Either a whole lot, a disproportionate number, of people I'm meeting here were born that day (and December 25th) or it's just a sort of default "not telling the world" day. Still, if you'd like at least a quiet birthday e-mail on your real birthday, let me know? (Both facts of course will be useful :) - date to send, and deep cover :) )

Eric resting, preparing to do a few chores, just finished doing some editing, but- enjoying a Quiet Day
(and there have been a few) was inspired by a few people referred to in an earlier blog ... who haven't done anything since, nor anyone like them really... but it does, to make one's position clear on the front page, not hidden away in the blogging. I use that as my title on MySpace also, or something like it. Good weekend so far. Need to test a disc I made this morning as a backup of one I bought, since the backup seems not to be working. Then, put title in abeyance and replace it with zu schlafen or appropriate (my last German learning was in 1991 or so). (Oy, confusing - edit of 10/1/06 - I briefly changed my title to something overlong to the effect "If you're only going to add me to offer to sell me something and talk with me only through bulletin" etc etc etc "don't bother" - then changed it to something else while thinking about how to rephrase that- no joy there, no idea ... *finish this later...*
about it isn't the Drama- I've been on LiveJournal for four years and there's even more opportunity for drama there; I don't enjoy it but ... I guess I haven't really "registered" that on MySpace yet (except for those beyond-silly "repost this or you're a fake friend so I'll drop you" bulletins. But then LJ has its own versions of that lemming... ah, you've got me being unfair to the noble lemming now. BLEAH.) Getting to the point for once in my life... It's the number of commercial profiles, of businesses in which I have no interest which pretend to be something else in order to get on my list on MySpace. I often humor them- unlike on LJ, just being a friend doesn't really get one that much preferment site-wise unless you're on my preferred list too and can read my interesting blog posts there- but I also get a bit impatient with people who communicate only by broad-band bulletin. (And in some cases have redirect Flash on their pages, and have, and get complimented for, copyrighted photos from others' websites, but eh...) There's been a little of that here... one person came in with a photo I recognized, asking me to subscribe to a service and send her money if I liked it, and then I realized where I knew the photo from... - (that she be allowed to explain-- maybe it's the same person- is one reason why this post is public on principle.) And months ago an amazingly inept bank-transfer-scammer asked me to head over to Yahoo!m to chat, and immediately moved the conversation in that direction- no cover story, no nuffin. But so far, not much. (That the Wikipedia article on Lost Cherry was podded - deleted without protest - probably explains it; low publicity comparatively, fewer spammers and scammers, despite all the promotion done by others. It could be undeleted I suspect-- by everything I know as a low-level admin there - and if it needs work, improvement, total reshaping, given that too- but there was no protest after a few days to the deletion request so there was no process, just deletion, by the rules.)
No, I don't have apnea, yes, I am relieved (yes, I need to drink fewer caffeinated drinks late in the day. D'oh.)

But for now... will just say - I do have a couple of "things" from over the break (may have mentioned already - new phone, new specs) that I'm very pleased with. Had to get the phone fixed, exchanged it with my mother's old one, the latter wasn't working properly either so it was replaced almost for free with a new one which is very nice (he says in a post he intends to make friends-only hopefully before too many random passersby who actually care.. eh, whatever... however, friends-only posts in at least some peoples' blogs can't be read by their writers, right now- a bit the flaw, and yes, I've begun to report this officially, may need to continue though...)

anyhow, phone is very nice and has a camera. Panic may proceed. (Though I don't think I can at the moment get the photos readily and easily from phone to computer. Maybe. Not positive!)

Eric
but too much subdivision might not be so good, either. I'm not a bouncer nor an admin here (I've been low-level support on LiveJournal; I am low-level support/sysop/administration on Wikipedia. Verrrrrrry low-level. However!) The bulletin's gone around and about and circled that...

In comments and public places and outside galleries on LostCherry - don't show images that would be adult-tagged if they were in a gallery. Think for a minute and you may be able to come up with more than one reason. Or I can edit this and spell them out (yes, I'm a bit in that mood this morning, which isn't helpful, I know. No one's fault but mine, sincerely and honestly said. I almost definitely will come back and edit this, or just create the new blog-set and duplicate/transfer this there in an expanded form.)

Followup...

and a bit of history, if this browser doesn't crash first. (I should write this in a text editor and just cut and paste in, really.) Around... 2000?... I was introduced to the comic "Sluggy Freelance": someone saw the photo of my sister's lop-ear Cleo, and thought she looked similar to Bun-Bun. (If you don't know what I'm talking about... have a look at the comic. And I'm so very glad the resemblance stops at looks.) Still... from Sluggy Freelance (Gateway Web-comic, people! Ware!!...) I became a fan of Kevin & Kell, GPF, College Roomies from Hell!!!, Ozy and Millie, and others (and I'll insert the links if you like). I became involved in discussion forums (run by "UBB" software which was a bit unstable. Another issue there.) A few people I talked with on those forums had LiveJournals. I talked at some length during one of my less happy years with one artist/author I met there, who created a comic and had a journal, considered joining the site myself, and did on New Years' eve 2002. (Oh joy, a new obsession. I do gravitate to them.) I spent a lot of time on LJ (livejournal.com) during 2002-3 especially- 2004 and 5 also, really - though after joining Wikipedia in late 2004, for example, my time was a bit divided (and after joining MySpace in mid-2005 it was just split. Work wasn't too effected- until recently which is yet another tale and even then not too seriously I think.) Didn't get here from there directly, but almost. Eric
that this site now has blogs, I thought I'd cheer. Still gone for a week-and (until next Tuesday) though. (Might well, probably post a more substantial blog in the next few days; just that it's midnight now.) Eric
