I am currently engaged in finding a woman with whom to be friends. I believe that relationship must begin at the beginning, which is acquaintance. In time, and after experiencing and communicating with one another, the relationship may progress toward and through the initial stages of friendship. As a friendship grows and evolves, two people will necessarily share more and more experiences, until an intimacy will develop between them.

Trying to advance a relationship beyond the point at which it actually resides, along the continuum between Ritual and Intimate will tend to derail the entire relationship.
