NEWPORT, R. Ronnie Lott Jersey .I. -- John Isner knows one thing: He wont have to see Nicolas Mahut on grass again this year. Top seed and defending champion Isner advanced to the quarterfinals at the Hall of Fame Tennis championships on Wednesday, beating Frances Mahut 6-2, 7-6 (2). The win by Isner featured the two players that played the longest match in tennis history. Two years ago, the pair played 11 hours, 5 minutes at Wimbledon, with Isner finally getting a 70-68 fifth-set victory. This one didnt have nearly the drama with the 6-foot-9 Isner using his overpowering serve to take charge. It ended when Mahut double faulted, ending the match in 1 hour, 18 minutes. Last year, the pair met again at Wimbledon, with Isner winning in three sets in a match that lasted about two hours. On Wednesday, playing under bright and sunny, late-afternoon skies with a slight breeze and a larger than usual crowd for the time of day, Isner ousted Mahut on Newports grass court. "From the moment I warmed up today I knew I was going to play better," said Isner, who struggled in his opening-round match Tuesday. "Getting that first match over yesterday helped a lot -- even though it wasnt the prettiest of matches." He broke in the first game of the match and again in the third en route to a 4-0 lead. He closed the first set in 31 minutes, getting aces on the final three points. "If I serve well it makes a big difference in my matches -- no matter how Im playing in the other facets of the game," he said. "Thats a weapon that Im very fortunate to have." And that ended a rematch of the pair that played on three different days two years ago. "Next years Wimbledon well probably see each other," he said, smiling when his news conference ended. Isner had 13 aces in the match. Second seed and Japans Kei Nishikori also advanced to the quarterfinals, outlasting Olivier Rochus from Belgium 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-2 in a match that lasted nearly two hours. Nishikori, ranked 18th in the world and the highest in his country, held a 5-0 lead in the tiebreak before losing the first set. He threw his racket to the ground twice as he headed to his chair for a break. "Its always tough when you have set point and you lose the set," he said. "I just tried to forget the first set and concentrate on each game. Luckily I got a break in the third game. I was able to keep my fight going." In other second-round play, Dudi Sela of Israel beat American Sam Querrey, a 2009 Newport runner-up who is recovering from an elbow injury last year 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-2. Querrey was up 5-3 in the second set and had two match points before Sela rallied. Rajeev Ram, the 2009 Newport champion, beat fellow American Michael Russell 7-6 (8), 6-3; and Izak Van Der Merwe of South Africa beat American Jack Sock 6-4, 6-4. Wild card and former No. 1 in the world Lleyton Hewitt of Australia beat American qualifier Tim Smyczek 6-4, 2-6, 6-1. Dashon Goldson Jersey . Canada is currently second in Group H with a 2-0-0-1 record, one point ahead of Switzerland, 2-0-1-0 through three games. Steve Young Womens Jersey . - Out for the game — and now much longer — with a serious knee injury, Adrian Peterson was on his way back from the X-ray room in the depths of the stadium when he looked at a television monitor. http://www.shopsanfrancisco49ersgear.com/womens-kendall-hunter-nike-jersey/ . Off-Season Game Plan looks at the Islanders roster, prospects and what hopes they might have for improving in 2012-2013. General Manager Garth Snow said that he doesnt expect dramatic changes. Patrick Willis Limited Jersey . The Wildcats beat one of the newcomers in their conference. Only a few minutes after No. 1 Alabama lost, Klein threw a 62-yard pass to set up the first of his two touchdown runs and the Wildcats went on to a 23-10 victory Saturday night at TCU. Aldon Smith Camo Jersey . But how? What had changed from one week to the next? Or is that the Ticats defence is just that average at stopping the run? When you consider the Stampeders started a right tackle in JMichael Deane who had previously only played right tackle during his years at Michigan State, and a left guard in Spencer Wilson who was making his first pro start after coming from the Calgary Colts junior football program in Alberta, 170 yards is a lot.The New Jersey Devils won Game Five of the Stanley Cup Final, 2-1 on home ice, forcing the series back to Los Angeles for Game Six. After managing just two goals total in the first three games of the series, the Devils have beaten Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick four times in the last two games. While thats hardly an offensive explosion, it has been enough to keep the Devils alive. Quick caused some of his own troubles in Game Five, with his misplay leading directly to the Devils first goal by Zach Parise. It was Parises first point of the Final series. Los Angeles tied the game early in the second period, as Justin Williams beat Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur with a snapshot off the rush. Williams was the Kings most dangerous performer, registering three shots on goal and have a few other high quality chances that didnt yield a red light. For his part, Brodeur was very good, stopping 25 of 26 shots, and a little lucky, benefitting from at least three pucks off the posts of his net. New Jerseys game-winner goes was credited to Bryce Salvador, playoff scoring hero, as his wrist shot from the point deflected off Vyacheslav Voynovs shoulder past Quick. Salvador, absurdly, has 14 points in the playoffs (after nine in the regular season), which has him tied with Drew Doughty for most among defencemen in the postseason. Dwight King led Kings with four shots on goal while Travis Zajac led the Devils with five shots on goal. Ilya Kovalchuk, who has struggled throughout the series (amid suspicion that hes hurt), was held to one shot on goal. His 18:34 of ice time was his lowest in a game this season, naturally includinng the playoffs. Colin Kaepernick Black Jersey. In his second game of the playoffs, Devils defenceman Henrik Tallinder was impressive once again. He and partner Marek Zidlicky frequently got the better of the matchup against the Kings line of Mike Richards, Jeff Carter and Dustin Penner. While that matchup worked in favour of the Devils, they werent as successful with Andy Greene and Mark Fayne taking on the Kings top line of Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams along with either Dustin Brown or Simon Gagne. Brown, who had been a staple on Los Angeles first line, yielded his spot to Gagne late in the third period, but the Kings still couldnt find the equalizer. The Kings return home and still have the advantage in the series, needing to win just one of the next two games to win the Cup, but now the New Jersey Devils have hope. The Devils will be underdogs in Game Six, but all they need to do is pull off an upset on the road -- something they already did in Game Four -- to force Game Seven. Clawing back from a three-games-to-none deficit is so unlikely, so improbable, that its hard to take a playoff series seriously once one team has fallen behind to that degree. But, considering that the Kings have a couple of overtime wins in their favour in this series -- games that could have gone either way -- and the Devils have now put together back-to-back wins, there is reason for the Devils to be hopeful. Theyre still underdogs, but they have a chance. Scott Cullen can be reached at Scott.Cullen@bellmedia.ca and followed on Twitter at http://twitter.com/tsnscottcullen.
