Please keep in mind that this is a work in progress. I have yet to decide a number of things regarding the storyline and any possible plot twists. For now, it's starting off as just narration. I mention some countries' names that are different from what they are now. In some cases, the country does not even exist today. At this point, I imagine that sometime in the not too distant future society will one way or another come undone. Please enjoy, and comment.
The bomb went off in St. Petersburg , Russia just after dusk. The flash of light and the resulting mushroom cloud were visible in Tallinn , Helsinki , Stockholm , Vilnius , Riga , Minsk , and Moscow. Seismographs from around the world twitched about and scribbled their own tale of what happened at that very second. The explosion was felt throughout Europe and western Asia, as far away as London and Istanbul. Just over a million people were incinerated instantly, and another million would die in the following months and years from injuries, starvation, radiation poisoning, or the rioting and military suppression of the riots afterwards.
Most nations condemned the incident as deplorable, heinous, and evil. The only countries not to share their sympathies were the Federal Republic of Chechnya (because they just don’t like the Russians), and the Anarchist State of Somalia (the former Somali government along with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the United Nations, the European Union, and the African Union (all of which are now dissolved) had abandoned any and all efforts to restore order and peace to that country in 2012. In the years since then, Somalia has been a safe haven and the main intersection of terrorists as well as a training ground for rebel sparatist armies from around the world. It has become a primary exchange of black market sellers and buyers and recently added weapons of an atomic nature to its list of available items). Tensions were running high in the world because no one knew what (if any) retaliation would come from the Russian leadership. Because of the situation in Somalia , many were turning a suspicious eye toward it, blaming it for the most horrific event in human history. Not blaming them directly for planting the bomb and detonating it, but blaming them for supplying the materials that were used to build it. No one yet knew who to blame for the actual planting of and detonation of the weapon. Since The Anarchist State has no representatives or elected leaders of any kind, no one could find out the truth.
