The last week of the year is my worst time of the year.
It all started on December 24, 2003 when we were on a combat mission in Baghdad Iraq to capture people that were laying Improvised Explosive Devices. That night keeps playing in my head 4 times a week and I been trying to change the ending of it. That night my Brigrade CSM faced the explosion that saved his driver a good friend of mine. My Vehicle was 1 spot behind his. My vehicle my driver,gunner, and myself was knocked out for about a minute. Then we started to kick in doors singing Christmas carols;as we detain these people. We found out he was dead, even though he didn't have children as his own he considered all of us as his own children taking care of us. He didn't miss any heavy combat mission as other higher ups staying on the compound where it was safe, he kicked doors along with us.
On the same week New Years Eve 2003 aboout 2:30p.m. it was my turn to face the explosion to try to save my driver and gunner. After I got patched up. I started going around to certain Soldiers saying I'm sorry for getting their Christmas packages destroyed in the blast. 48 hours after this day, I went back on combat patrols to continue my missions.
My worst mission my chain of command gave me after i got back to Germany on January 16th,2004 was to pack and take care of the CSM wife. Even though we got off on the wrong foot in the beginning. I explained to her that what got her husband on Christmas got myself the following holiday. she asked me why I'am I always smiling, and i explained to her that i'm still alive to take care of your needs.
