Ultimatum: The awakening

I'm in a creative non-fiction writing class and we are supposed to write a story. This is what I've got so far. Thoughts? Critiques? Ideas?

Ultimatum: The Awakening

“I’m awesome! No you’re not dude, don’t lie. I’m awesome…” my ringtone faded out as I tried to fall back asleep. In response it began to sing louder and vibrate furiously on my nightstand ultimately foiling my attempt to snooze. I was having the most bizarre dream but it didn’t feel like it was supposed to over yet, like there was still more to it. Oh well, that ship has sailed now.

I grabbed my phone, shut my alarm off, and checked my messages noting it was about time to get ready for school. A couple invites for parties this weekend, some new comments on old photos, and more of those stupid game invites no one wants to get. I jumped out of bed, slid my comfy house shoes on, grabbed clothes from my dresser and hopped in the shower. While drying off then redressing I noticed a faint noise coming from my living room. I assumed it was just the next wake-up call from my phone but when I came down the stairs I recognized the source of the noise was my C.B. radio.

“I want to save the world.  But in doing so I must become a monster. It is both a blessing and a curse. You see, in order to bring peace, love unity and equality to all I must engage in some heinous acts and people are going to get hurt, killed even. I must fight against those who “educate” us.  Those who have the majority of you under a veil of deceit and secrets, though I know there are some of you who have been awakened. Some may call me a vigilante or a rogue, but no one calls me a hero. I’m not asking for a medal or award or a ceremony, but it would be nice for a little appreciation, a little understanding that this cleansing is necessary and most importantly forgiveness from those I may hurt in the process due to the sacrifices that must be made in order to achieve these world ideals.”

That speech was burned into my mind from the moment I heard it, the seductive voice, faint yet electric through the momentary lapses in static from my old CB radio. They were novelties around here now, rarely found in working condition, so it was largely unusual to have contact from one. But there was something different about this message, something secret or special, a faint, mysterious air, like it was directed specifically at me.

My thought trailed off interrupted by a subtle vibration notifying me of a video message from my best friend Jefe. “I’m here, hurry up.” “Oh shit.” I said, noticing it was after twelve and we would probably be late to school again, as we often were due to my lackadaisical personality. As I got in the car and said hello my mind couldn’t help but wander back to the message, and furthermore why I somehow felt so connected.

Jefe looked over at me and asked “How ya doing bro?” “I’m alright bro.” I replied. “I had a crazy ass dream I can only remember bits and pieces of but I didn’t get to finish it. And then when I got out of the shower I heard some weird message on the C.B. I mean it was weird but it made sense. I don’t know, it’s gonna bug me if I keep thinking about it and I still can’t remember.”

“Woah, woah woah, back up. You had a message on the C.B.? From who? What did they say?”

“I’m not really sure who it was from. But the content of the message was pretty clear. Essentially it said something big is gonna be happening soon and some big changes are gonna be coming, though I don’t exactly know when.”

“What do you mean something big? Like what? And what changes?”

“Well from the sounds of it a war for the world. Like a salvation of humanity type of deal. I mean the why and the how were mentioned but nothing necessarily about who, when or where.”

Our conversation finished up as we pulled up to park at school. As we walked into the building to meet up with friends we started discussing schoolwork. We sat down at our table in the cafeteria, where we were greeted by our friends, curious about how our days were going. My mind wandered hazily back to my dream, trying to recall the details and fit them together piece by piece like a puzzle until I heard mention of a message similar to mine. My mind quickly shifted gears and started paying attention to the conversation at hand.

“I heard that servers everywhere got hacked this morning and some message was broadcast globally informing us that someone intends on fighting for peace for humanity by any means necessary,” reported Ginger, our techie friend. A feisty red-headed female companion, she stood at 5’ 7 but had a tongue like whip, and very technologically inclined. “And not just that but apparently there was a frequency jammer with a heavy firewall encrypted into the signal so the voice was distorted. Police and government officials weren’t able to trace it.”

“Yeah word on the street is these guys are serious. I’ve heard they’ve been doing recruiting all across the globe. It sounds like they are coordinating something major. Of course that’s all just hear say.” Tieran was our gossip girl. Light blonde hair, light, almost icy blue eyes, fashionable as next year’s trends, and as book smart as she was street smart. “But if all of this is true Ginger, it sounds like these guys have the hardware and the manpower to do some damage.”

“The major question here is who are “They”?” I said. Jefe and I turned and looked at each other quizzically, then back at the girls but not before they had noticed our exchange. They both stared intently at us and simultaneously demanded “SPILL!” After exchanging another glance with Jefe I explained about the weird dream I had and then the message I heard after my shower. “So wait. You still have a C.B.?” Tieran asked, stifling back laughter. “Those things are like, ancient,” she snorted, “what the hell do you need with one of those?” We all laughed as I shook my head, “Anyways, the voice wasn’t distorted for me. And I don’t know why but I can’t help but feel like my dream and the message are connected.” Noticing the time we concluded our fraternization and headed our separate ways toward class.
