luvspitbulls's blog: "unconditional"

created on 02/16/2012  |  http://fubar.com/unconditional/b346542

The sun rises on another beautiful SC day, down the hall trots an American Pit Bull Terrier (A.P.B.T). Looking out the two large glass doors into the back yard, she starts to bark at some squirrels. The door opens and she is out the door in seconds, bounding from the porch to the rail and over she goes. The squirrels panic and run for the saftey of the tree's that scatter the yard! She circles the tree's, all the time grunting and whinning , as if to say  "well, i got em up there, now what"?

After all, thats her main goal of the day, like every other day, is to please and get the much wanted "GOOD GIRL" from daddy!!! Which she almost always gets for chasing those bird seed stealing thiefs off the porch!

By the time the excitement of the mornings chase wears off. an elderly women comes down the hall, her slippers shuffling across the carpet, the long red robe she wore almost draggin the floor. Heads for the coffee pot, cigarettes in hand. The dog is under foot as usual, tail half beating her to death, getting caught in the robe making that cold updraft! 'KOUT' she says on the way to her chair, the dog walking ahead as if to make sure the path was secure. The women sits down with her coffee and turns on the tv and begins a normal day. Busy days with a A.P.B.T around, the seemingly constant need for "outside" breaks to chase the squirrles helps to pass the day along with the squeeky toys and balls, scattered throughout the living room.

As the days go by, the routine sets in and the lady and the dog begin to bond as no other animal bonds with its owner. Lunch time is especially good for the dog, she knows there is always treats for her no matter what. She still puts on the "look how pathetic i am" act with tail between her legs, ears down and the ever so sad puppy eyes. One would think this dog was never fed or payed attention to at all, if it were up to her anyway! She loved the new addition to the family, after all, it was her daddy's mommy!

old age isnt always the golden years for some, as illness falls upon the elderly lady, the dog stands by her beloved "grammy" to keep a watchful eye. She worries that something bad is comming, but how to tell her daddy? "I'll just keep watch" (she thinks to herself) and curls up in the hallway outside the bedroom door. Her rountine has changed, but she adapts to the changes quickly and settles into the new routine.

Then one night something changed, somethings not right. The dog runs to the living room where her daddy is and runs around his feet , under the computer table. he looks down and says " what are doing under there"? She crawls out and licks his leg, looking up at him, ears up, head tilted. She lets out a small grunt and heads back down the hallway and enters the bedroom. She notices that grammy isnt breathing right. "OH NO" she thinks and runs back out in to the living room where her daddy is on the computer. She jumps up on him to get his attention. "get down" he says, "what is wrong with you, you need to go out"? she runs to the big glass doors that face the back yard and waits. (she is always first) The door slides open. She does not go out but just stands there sniffing and looking up at her daddy. "somethings wrong with grammy" she says. but he doesnt understand what she is saying. He closes the door and goes back into the other room and continues what he was doing. "How can i let him know something is very wrong" she thinks to herself and runs down the hallway and into the bedroom. "DEE, COME" says daddy. she does not go to him as she knows she should, "but this is important" she thinks to herself and sits down in front of the door, looking at him. He turns around and goes back to the computer. She runs to him again and under the table she goes, banging into his legs and the top of the table, licking at him and finally jumping back up on him."DOWN" he says. She jumps down and looks up at him with her big eyes,"somethings wrong with grammy"! she says with a few grunts and whines as she runs down the hallway into the bedroom again.

He calls to her again,"DEE COME" she dis-obeys again, only going hallway out the looking into the room then at her daddy, then looks to the floor. He gets up and walks down the hallway calling to her "DEE COME". She doesnt come. "Thats odd, she always comes" he thinks as he is approaching the doorway. The closer he gets to the bedroom, a noise comming out of the room gets louder and begins to sound not so much like the snoring it first reminded him of. as he breaks the threshold of the door and turns on the light, time seems to slow down. as he looks to the bed where his mother lies. it appears she is swimming in slow motion, there is a white foam comming out of her mouth. panic sets in as he runs to the other room to get the phone and calls 911. the dog does not leave the room, but stands watch, hoping that grammy will be ok. Daddy is calling the people with the big truck with the bright lights on it. they will help grammy.

she sits in the chair and waits, for what seems an eternity when she hears a familiar sound come from the front of the house. she runs to the window and looks out to see her daddy walking to the door. he walks in the door, almost tripping over her as she fumbles over herself greeting him. he hugs and kisses her and tells her what a good dog she is. she is so happy to get praise and love from her daddy, but where is grammy? is she ok?

Dee never saw her grammy again, she passed away 5 days after the events of that night. her daddy told her how special she was for giving him those 5 extra days with his mommy. he said that there was no human that could have done that and that made their bond unbreakable.

this story is true, it is about my dog little dee and my mother mary merrill. i will never forget what my A.P.B.T did on that night. without prior training or being told what to do. she knew something was wrong and she took action.the media where i was living at the time didnt care about what she had done. they didnt care that a "pit bull" was a hero! that a "pit bull" had givin the gift of life, even if only 5 days. i care what she did! she is my hero and our bond will never be broken!!!
