What are you waiting for?

So Glad It's Over.

Valentine's Day is an obligatory holiday designed to make people spend their hard earned money on silly things like flowers that'll just die anyway and candy that'll just get eaten. Yeah, I said it. Someone had to. Can you tell that I spent my day NOT celebrating love? No flowers and candy. No cards and kisses. No moonlit walks and stolen embraces. But it was by choice. The person I would have wanted to share this day with is separated from me by a great distance and that whole "if you can't be with the one you love then love the one you're with" thing just never did work for me. Besides the entire concept of setting aside one day in a year to celebrate love is ludicrous to me. Think about it...trying to cram everything that love is into one 24 hour period...it's impossible. Besides, if you're not celebrating love every day of the year then you don't have real love to begin with. Love encompasses so many things. It is a bond...a complex emotion...a connection... Connection. Life is funny sometimes. You never know when or how you will meet someone and just "connect" with them. Quite often, it's at a time when you don't particularly want it and are certainly not even looking for it. You could be going along through your daily routine and PRESTO, it's there without warning. You didn't look for it and you certainly didn't want it, but it's there nonetheless. Have you ever noticed how often life gives you what you need instead of what you want? If this sounds ridiculous, think back on some of the lessons life has taught you about, for example, responsibility. Did you want to learn those lessons? Hell, no. Responsibility sucks. It just means that you can't do what you want whenever you want. But you needed to learn these lessons in order to grow up, to be a better person, to be a good parent, to get the job done... Have you ever thought much about fate? Maybe we're just meant to find the people that life has somehow decided we need to find.In my life I have found people whom, although I lived for years not even knowing they existed, I can no longer imagine not having them in my life. One day you're going through life, maybe a bit busy and stressed out, but still thinking everything is fine. And the next day you meet someone who somehow makes it all seem a little bit better. You may not have been searching to find that person but somehow you needed them. Human beings are, by nature, social creatures. Even before we thought to define the reasons why, our ancestors were gathering in caves, huddling around campfires, forming clans and tribes. Many other creatures in the animal kingdom give birth, raise their children for a while, and then part from their offspring sometimes never to see them again. Humans give birth, raise their children, continue to hold them close throughout adulthood, and expect them to take care of us as we grow old. We have turned it into a cycle. We form lasting bonds because we NEED them. They are somehow neccesary to our survival and our lives are enriched by them whether we wanted those attachments to form in the first place or not. Human beings are capable of real, deep down to the bone love. This is what separates us from the animals. Well...that and opposable thumbs... By the way...Happy Valentine's Day...if you go for that sorta thing...
