New York state Assemblyman Steven F. McLaughlin has taken flak for comparing governor Andrew Cuomo to Hitler and Mussolini due to the methods used to ram through a draconian gun law in the state.

“We’re told basically to shut up and vote, and that’s what this is all about,” McLaughlin said during a news conference. “Just don’t question it, just vote. That’s basically the message here. If that’s not dictatorial, I don’t know what is.

“Hitler would be proud. Mussolini would be proud of what we did here. Moscow would be proud, but that’s not democracy.”

McLaughlin defended his remarks after he was challenged by the corporate media. “How does Putin act over in Russia?” he asked. “Same thing. Dictate to the Legislature what they’re going to do. They’re rubber-stamping it. I’m not calling the governor a dictator. I’m saying that this was the dictatorial thing to do.”

The Assemblyman later issued a video apologizing for his remarks.

In January, the NRA and other pro-Second Amendment groups criticized Cuomo and the New York Senate for their underhanded effort to force passage of the legislation designed to undercut the Second Amendment.

“Governor Andrew Cuomo, in stunningly brazen fashion, took a hatchet to gun rights in New York with lightning speed.” the NRA reported. “By cutting secret deals behind closed doors, eliminating public input and circumventing normal legislative processes, the Governor and state Senate passed sweeping anti-gun measures.”

Cuomo’s approval among Republicans, Independents and even Democrats plummeted after he forced the legislation through. A Quinnipiac University poll released in late January revealed the Democrat governor dropped from his all-time high approval rating of 74 percent in December to 59 percent, the Associated Press reported.

“Cuomo blames the drop on the public’s misunderstanding of the gun measures, which he rushed into law without public hearings or the required public review period,” the AP noted.
