In Vermont, an Abenaki tribesman is under fire from the government because he's been handweaving baskets and selling them as Native made. Since the government never put the Abenaki tribe onto a reservation, they don't recognize them as a valid Tribe, and they're threating the artist, saying he's breaking Federal law by selling his baskets under a Tribal label.
I'm perplexed here, so help me figure this out.
Should I help with the Abenaki movement for being recognized? (this would probably end up with the Tribe being stuffed onto some crappy reservation)
**or**
Should I just lobby the government to change their very 50's, lame definition of what is Native? (current definition states that you have to be a registered member in an officially recognized tribe to be Native) |
