I know you've been waiting for it. Today is the day we tackle that subject that everyone thinks they know everything about when in reality no one knows anything about it. We are going to attempt to define LOVE. We certainly won't be the first. In fact the dictionary I hold in my hands contains a grand total of 7 definitions for this elusive word. Count 'em, folks...7! So, without further ado...here we go...
1. A deep, tender,ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude toward a person, such as that arising from kinship, recognition of attractive qualities, or a sense of underlying oneness.
2. A feeling of intense desire or attraction toward a person with whom one is disposed to make a pair, the emotion of sex and romance.
3. A. sexual passion B. sexual intercourse C. love affair
4. An intense emotional attachment, as for a pet or treasured object.
5. A person who is the object of deep and intense affection or attraction; beloved. Often used as a term of endearment.
6. An expression of one's affection.
7. A. A strong predilection or enthusiasm. B. The object of such an enthusiasm.
Whew! That was more than a mouthful. But did it really SAY anything? Are you any less confused about it than you were before I got carpal tunnel typing it? I know I'm not. Fuck! What a waste of time. The truth is, we could all spend every minute of every day of every month of every year for the rest of our lives pondering the meaning of this word and not understand it at all. You know how they say if you put 10000 monkeys in a room with 10000 typewriters they would write the great american novel? Yeah well, let's just put it this way...it wouldn't be a romance novel. That's for sure.
The previous is an exerpt from another blog I wrote over a year ago. Mostly it still holds true...but I think I may have gained some wisdom in this area. And here's what I've come up with.
The first thing I'm going to say is that love is not the same for everyone. I can only tell you what I feel it should be like...what I've learned it is like...for me.
Love is caring more about someone else's happiness than your own.
Love is forgiving the little trespasses and overlooking the petty differences.
Love is remembering the little things.
Love giving all you can even when you're getting nothing in return.
Love is honesty.
Love is compromise.
Love is not judgemental.
Love is...well, love is a lot of things. But my favorite explanation for it is this:
LOVE IS FRIENDSHIP ON FIRE.
