July 20th my friend Lola passed away. I was a complete and total shock. Yes she had been sick, but was on the mend. Or so we thought.
I met Lola 2 years ago on the first day of class when I went back to college. I was totally terrified that day - thinking omg I am going to be the oldest in the class, and I am going to fail -I al too stupid for school. Basically - WTF am i doing!?!?!?!
The instructors did the typical ice breaker exercises - getting us to introduce ourselves and what not. The first class Tony had us group up somehow (I forget how) and Lola was in my group. I told her I was nervous as I hadn't been in school for a long time. She told me I would be just fine. We were friends from then on.
Lola was always quick with a comment to make you laugh. She was intelligent, strong, independant, and wonderful.
One of my favorite memories of her is when we went to see David Beckham play soccor. They search bags and what not as u go into the stadium. Lola pipes up - "Are you checking my bag just because I'm black?" the poor kid waves her through. Then when its my turn she pipes up "Are you checking her bag just because she is with someone who is black?".
Or how she use to tick off our English teacher. OMG this woman was an old bag, full of shit anfd couldn't teach her way outta a paper bag. On the first day she told us how she could not ban food from her class room but she frowned upon it as it was rude. The class started at 12 noon so we ate anyway. But Lola would soak carrot sticks in ice water to make sure they were nice and crispy and loud. She ate them all through class lol.
I went to message Lola today - ask her if she wanted to go ut for coffee - and then I remembered. I don't know if it will ever sink in she is gone.
I know I will miss her forever - and every time I see anything of the Oilers t will remid me of her.
