Firefly
If you see my flying in the night sky
Would you try to capture me hold?
Like a flying diamond light
Flapping wings, I am lit up bright
Elfin little night time sprite
Firefly, that’s me—tonight
Children laugh to see my fly
Up in the blue-black midnight sky
Chasing me, they frolic and play
All their little cares away
Now when you see me
What is it you feel?
That in your heart my life you would steal
If you took and put me, up
And kept me in a jar or cup
Worry not your fears are wrong
Simply hold me gently, not strong
For when you feel you need the light
Hold me close to be yours—bright
I am a gift from nature pure
I light your path for this I am sure
For when your heart is needing be found
We sit together my light to surround
In your hands I light up give
My joy is in my life, the one I live
To give to you is my simple wish
The light at night a moonlight kiss
For with a childlike grace you see
I see the wonder inside you be
That love is something eternal at best
Many have failed your time-honored test
Understand this for I see you quite clear
I see the heart of a man so dear
Who fights his battles, as he loves his loves
Each one precious; all his doves
So in your hands I give off be
One of the fireflies that you captured see
Hands of strength with wisdom great
Allow my light never be sedate
So in the blue-black stillness yours
Forever and always on the waterside—shores…
