I called in the following day, using my woman problems as an excuse, the truth was I only had the one day left in the toy department, I was scheduled to transfer to cashier the following day, I took the day off the recoup my mentality. Working the toy department was a lot different than running a register all day, spending time with my children seemed to make everything worth whiled so we spent the day playing video games together instead.
Mike had went in the department looking for me. He had no idea that not only had I called in that day, but I was also to be transferred the next day, he was afraid he would never see me again. I am so grateful for fate tat he never gave up on me because within a week or so he finally found me in one of the many long lines.
I looked up and there he was. I felt he was just as nervous as I was and he flirted with me as I was checking him out. It took him a few more trips to get up enough courage to ask me out. When he did I was so nervous that I blurted out, I'm a single mother of two children, my god is that all I can think of brilliant. Without skipping a beat he asked me "Don't single mothers get hungry too?" He gave me his number and told me to call him.
I called him after my shift was over from the payphone in layaway we talked for hours and I lost track of time the next thing knew it went from being 10 p.m. to it going on 2 a.m. I hated to go but I needed to get home my babysitter would be worried so I agreed to go out to dinner with him on my next day off and hung up. I fell asleep feeling happy and free for the first time in a long time.
I realized I didn't given him my number so I hoped he would come in the next day. I felt like a schoolgirl with her first crush praying he would come in , I waited for an eternity and took a break, feeling saddened he never showed up, as I was walking back in from my break there he was, I asked him to let me have a pen and paper and I wrote my number using his chest as a desk. His pounding heart let me know everything I needed to know, he was as interested in me as I was him .
