The Secret Within CHAPTER ONE (rough draft) April 19th 2009 Milwaukee WI The wind is cold coming off Lake Michigan as the sun sets, which is a great relief for Devin. The suns rays are just bearable for him during the daylight hours of spring time in Wisconsin. Soon though, very soon he wont be tolerating the ultraviolet rays as the earths rotation puts itself on axis in direct path of the sun. But for now the earths atmosphere and a bottle of sunscreen protect is skin from burning. Devin is very amused by Hollywood's interpretation of the vampires and sunlight bursting them to flames. In a few weeks Devin and his father, Hannibal will make their way to the southern hemisphere, for Argentina to avoid being forced into nocturnal state. Devin remembers a hundred years ago doing just that during summer months. Science definitely assists vampires and humans alike. In the recent few decades Devin and Hannibal have put their hands in the blood donation market and own donation centers in Milwaukee, New Orleans, Denver, San Fransisco, Tampa Bay and Brooklyn. several in South America, Asia, Russia and scattered throughout Europe as well. The hunting days are over and as Devin becomes older the thirst subsides, which leaves much needed time to continue other business ventures. being an adult club owner seems to suit his lifestyle just fine, where as his father doesn't approve completely and frequently complains about his choices. The clubs and websites have his finances affording him a custom Mercedes Mclaren as an everyday vehicle, along with an H2 and Dodge challenger prototype. Life has been fruitful to say the least. As Devin makes his way home from one of his gogo clubs, for a shower and something to cure his thirst, Milla calls him. looking at the display on his phone, a devious grin crosses his mouth, and anwers. "hello milla, have you dialed the wrong romaine?" Devin sarcastically questions. "If I had, wouldn't you be disappointed, I do need to speak with you about something important." in her British accent, that she tries desperately to conceal announces. "If you are carrying out my fathers agenda about my choice in business, save your breath." Devin blatantly says. "Not this time, you spoiled fucking brat!" sarcasm dripping from her tone. "I can always make time for a woman in leather." "Good, I'm coming into Mitchell international at midnight. I'll call you when i get checked in." she pauses for a few seconds, and continues. "or should I come right to your estate?' "Suite yourself, ill let Darwin know you'll be coming and he can prepare the guestroom for you." speaking as if he expected her to invite herself. "will you be alone this evening or will you be with one of your bloody whores?" she spat with a slightness of jealousy. "you never can tell, Milla. you know how i get after quenching." Milla hangs up with out saying a word. devin looks at his phone mused and sets it on the seat next to him in the mclaren. if it weren't for his enjoying driving his toys so much, Devin could simply tele-port home. it a skill hes mastered quite well and enjoys almost as much as the mclaren. as he makes a left turn on lake drive on the final few blocks of his journey home he playfully burns out down the street. pulling into his dive, pushing the garage door button on the console,opening the overhead door. smiling at the site of his h2, as if to talk to the truck, pulls in next to it, and heads in the house. "Darwin, Milla will be arriving shortly after midnight tonight. make the normal arrangement for her comfort and try to be pleasant to her. I know you despise Weres but she has been around long enough and proven her loyalty to the family." Devin said to his white haired 82 year old assistant. "as you wish, master Devin." darwin calmly states in his pompous french accent. Darwin turned and headed towards the room he would prepare. "by the way, there is fresh beverages for you in the kitchen and i took the liberty of sending Ms. Amanda home in a cab. she looked like you enjoyed her company this morning." Devin just smiled. Darwin has been Devin's butler for so long now hes considered an assistant. hes aware that his employer is a vampire, and saw him ravage a woman to death in an alley when Darwin was in his 20's. Darwin had just barely survived ww2 and was on a 2 year gin binder at the time Devin met him. He would have killed him to protect his identity as a vampire but the fact that Darwin didn't seem to fear what he saw,Darwin was spared. although Devin, for the most part, kidnapped him and imprisoned him in a wine cellar for a week in an old castle in Dublin, he didn't say a word about the incident. when Devin came back for Darwin he had consumed 17 bottles of wine in 4 days and drunk himself sober, to never touch booze again. Devin informed him if he ever wanted to see the light of day again, he would have to agree to two things. one, never speak of what he saw or that he had any knowledge of vampires and that he would have to be his well compensated for servant for the rest of his life. Darwin agreed by nodding and stated " don't make me what ever it is you are." Devin smiled and that was the end of it. he knew that he was a french soldier and had most likely seen the Germans do unspeakable things so the vampire thing wasn't anything to shock Darwin. which was the main reason Devin allowed him to breathe. the second reason being the loyal look in his eyes and Devin's telepathic abilities reading his thoughts.
