EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Curtis Martin was decked out in a Jets green tie and shoes, looking sharp as ever on another big day for the Hall of Fame running back. The Jets retired his No. 28 jersey at halftime of New Yorks season-opening game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Martin, inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last month, joined three of the biggest names in franchise history -- Joe Namath (No. 12), Don Maynard (13), who were both in attendance, and Joe Klecko (73) -- as the only players to receive the prestigious honour. Martin was also joined at midfield by former Jets teammates Ray Mickens, Victor Green and Fred Baxter. "Words cant express it," a smiling Martin said before the game. "I almost feel just like the Hall of Fame. Theres a part of this thats almost even bigger than the Hall of Fame because its the hometown, the crowd I played in front of for all these years." The whole idea had Martin pretty excited, something he said usually wouldnt happen for him until he ran out of the tunnel before a game. "I never even thought I would come close to anything like this," Martin said, "so Im just so excited, so humbled and so appreciative." The 39-year-old Martin played his first three NFL seasons with New England before signing with New York in 1998. He is fourth on the NFLs career rushing list with 14,101 yards, but has always thought his reputation for being one of the classiest players in the game while he was playing was most important. "I think my legacy starts with me as a man," he said. "I try to read all the fan mail as much as possible, and its rare that someone talks about a game that I played or a run that I had. Most of the people tell me that about the impact that I had on their lives, how I inspired them to do something better or more in their lives. And thats what I want my legacy to be. I want to be known as the man more so than the football player." Martin had one of the most heartfelt speeches during his Hall of Fame induction in Canton, Ohio, bringing many in the crowd of 12,100 to tears as he spoke of the hardships he and his mother, Rochella, endured while he grew up in the Pittsburgh area. The former running back said he met an 8-year-old boy the next day at an autograph signing, and he tried to tell Martin how moved he was by the speech. A few moments later, a man who Martin guessed was about 90 years old, had a similar message for him. "Ive tried to create my life around doing whats right," Martin said. "A lot of people say the good guy never wins. I feel like Im proof that if you do things the right way and if you work hard enough, the good guy can win." Wholesale Nike NFL Jerseys From China .S. With New York hit hard by Superstorm Sandy, the Knicks game scheduled for Thursday in Brooklyn was postponed, and Heat players thought theirs would follow. Instead, they flew from Miami on Thursday afternoon and arrived in their New York hotel after a three-hour bus ride from nearby Newark, N.J. Wade was so sure the game would be postponed that he never even packed until after practice Thursday. His reaction to all the traffic as New Yorkers struggle to recover further convinced him it should have been rescheduled. "If were in a car and were in traffic for three hours, what are other people who are really affected by this, what are they doing? How are they getting around, how are they moving, et cetera?" Wade said after the Heats morning shootaround at Madison Square Garden. "So it was just like, come on man, we shouldnt be here to play a basketball game. If anything, we should be here to do something to help the city." The NBA had no response to Wades comment. Wade is planning to donate the equivalent of a game check -- $209,536.59, before taxes -- to relief efforts, a decision he made Friday morning. Hes done similar things in the past, like joining former Heat teammate Alonzo Mourning to raise $1 million after a massive earthquake struck Haiti in 2010. James said the Heat hadnt been here long enough to witness any damage beyond what they had seen on TV. He added he was glad to be in the city but was aware that even New Yorkers were conflicted as to whether the games should go on. "I think were all in agreement when we say that getting everything situated and getting everything back up and running from the hurricane is more important than a basketball game, but theres also people that believe that we need this basketball game for a lot of spirits and a lot of families," James said.dddddddddddd "So Im kind of 50-50 with it as well. "Im happy to be here to play a basketball game, but at the same time, if the people thats here at the basketball game or you know the people thats helping out with this game, could give their efforts to make the city run or make these families come out of this situation, then I think thats more important." The Knicks-Nets game that would have been played at the Barclays Center on Thursday was postponed at the request of Mayor Michael Bloomberg because most of the citys mass-transit system still wasnt operational. But the city didnt have the same concerns about playing at Madison Square Garden, which is easier to drive to and offers much more parking options in Manhattan. Knicks players said Thursday they werent sure what kind of crowd to predict for what would normally be a packed house. James and Wade, who like many stars love playing at the Garden, expect the usual vocal crowd as long as fans can get here. Wade just isnt sure they should even have to try. "I just felt like everything thats going on that theres bigger things to be concerned about, worried about than us coming to town to play a basketball game," he said. "So I didnt feel it, obviously were here and we want to play well and we want to do all that, but I thought they would cancel it. I woke up yesterday and I thought it would be cancelled. "I didnt think that the game of basketball was of importance today, but the show must go on I guess and we will try to come out here and represent both cities, Miami and New York," Wade added. "Miami is always affected by hurricanes, so were very sensitive to whats going on here because we know how it can affect the community. But I just felt there was bigger things to be concerned about."
