For My Child & Yours...

Photobucket Autism/Asperger's Picture Train Help Spread Awareness One Person At A Time! Please Copy One Of These Picture Below & Put On Your Profile!!! Heya! My Name is Krystal (EchoAngel). I have an 9 year old son named Jaren. I don't have to tell you that he is my life. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome AKA High Functioning Autism at 3 years old. He isn't stupid, actually quite the opposite, he is brilliant. He has faced a lot of challenges including delayed social skills, facial & vocal cues and body language cues were also some things that were hard for him to catch on. Fortunately, Jaren was diagnosed early and had an advantage that many children didn't. He is overcoming all obstacles one by one. Now he has also learned that everyone has things about themselves that they want to change and in time and with hard work, we all can do anything, not just children with extra challenges. He is learning what his strengths and weaknesses are. His speech skills are years ahead as well as others skills personal to him. He is my son. I love him more than I love my own life. I thank God for His gift to me. Photobucket (Thank You Eric For Making This Picture For Me Of My Son & I. I Love It!!) Each child is a gift from God. A child with a condition such as Autism / Asperger's is just one of many conditions that many children are born with today. I see the ignorance and the bullying that accompany any child that stands out in a crowd that seems a bit different or unique. I just want to point out that though our children are all different and unique. We all have disabilities. Some not as noticeable as others. I am so proud of child that will stick up for a younger sibling. This isn't easy at all. I am also so proud of our children who have outward disabilities and still face the outside world. Outside the protective 'bubble' of family and friends and face the world with a smile. We all know how children can be mean and how peer pressure and bullying is. I feel that with a bit of education and knowledge... it will go along way. CommentYou.com is your One Stop Shop

For Moms & Dads

Most women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressures and a couple by habit. This year, nearly 100,000 women will become mothers of 'special' children. Did you ever wonder how mothers of 'special' children are chosen? Somehow, I visualize God hovering over earth selecting His instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As He observes, He instructs His angels to make notes in a giant ledger. "Armstrong, Beth, son. Patron saint, Matthew. "Forrest, Marjorie, daughter. Patron saint, Cecelia. "Rudledge, Carrie, twins. Patron saint...give her Gerard, He's used to profanity." Finally, He passes a name to an angel and smiles, "Give her a 'special' child." The angel is curious. "Why this one, God? She's so happy." "Exactly," smiles God. "Could I give a 'special' child a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel." "But has she patience?" asks the angel. "I don't want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she'll handle it. "I watched her today. She has that feeling of self and independence that is so rare and so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I'm going to give her has his own world and that's not going to be easy." "But Lord, I don't think she even believes in you." God smiles. "No matter. I can fix that. This one is perfect. She has just enough selfishness." The angel gasps, "Selfishness? Is that a virtue?" God nods. "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child who is less than perfect. She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a "spoken word." She will never consider a "step" ordinary. When her child says "Momma" for the first time, she will be present at a miracle and know it! When she describes a tree or sunset to her blind child, she will see it as few people ever see my creations. "I will permit her to see clearly the things I see....ignorance, cruelty, prejudice... and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life because she is doing my work as surely as she is here by my side." "And what about her patron saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in mid-air. God smiles. "A mirror will suffice." When Time Magazine talks, people listen. That's why this week's story, "Case Study: Autism and Vaccines," is drawing attention, raising concerns, and perhaps pushing forward the notion that autism and vaccines could be connected. Time reporter Claudia Wallis was careful, in her article, to address the complexity of the Hannah Poling Vaccine Court decision. She made it clear that the case was unusual; that experts in mitochondrial disorders found the decision surprising, and quotes a statement from the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation saying, "There are no scientific studies documenting that childhood vaccinations cause mitochondrial diseases or worsen mitochondrial disease symptoms." She also quotes Dr. Julie Gerberding, Director of the CDC, as saying "the government has made absolutely no statement about indicating that vaccines are the cause of autism, as this would be a complete mischaracterization of any of the science that we have at our disposal today." But when Wallis sums up her research, and points out what she feels are the takeaway messages of the Hannah Poling case, is not altogether neutral. She, like many parents of children with autism (and unlike the vast majority of pediatricians), questions the safety of the present vaccination schedule. She suggests that parents take a more active role in designing their children's immunization schedule. In fact, she could be said to be taking an activist stance: It's difficult to draw any clear lessons from the case of Hannah Poling, other than the dire need for more research. One plausible conclusion is that pediatricians should avoid giving small children a large number of vaccines at once, even if they are thimerosal-free. Young children have an immature immune system that's ill-equipped to handle an overload, says Dr. Judy Van de Water, an immunologist who works with Pessah at U.C. Davis. "Some vaccines, such as those aimed at viral infections, are designed to ramp up the immune system at warp speed," she says. "They are designed to mimic the infection. So you can imagine getting nine at one time, how sick you could be." In addition, she says, there's some evidence, that children who develop autism may have immune systems that are particularly slow to mature. Van de Water worries that current vaccine schedules may be overly aggressive for some children. She suggests that parents who are concerned about vaccine safety ask their pediatricians to give fewer at a time. And, she adds, don't vaccinate a child when he or she is ill.... "My daughter's case raises more questions than it answers," concedes her father, Dr. Jon Poling, a neurologist who also has a Ph.D. in biophysics. Poling believes in the importance of vaccinating children: "Vaccines are one of the most important advances in the history of medicine," he says, "but people need to know there is a risk to every medicine. There may be a small percentage of people who are susceptible to injury." He and his wife would like to see thimerosal eliminated from flu vaccines, which continue to be given to children and pregnant women, a fact that, he thinks, could be one reason autism rates haven't declined. And he urges pediatricians to take a hard look at the schedule on which vaccines are given. "I think we need a grassroots movement among pediatricians to be more conservative, and not give so many shots at once." Time is more than just another publication. It has a huge readership, and a reputation for legitimacy. Like certain other news outlets, it has a real impact on Americans' choices and beliefs. Through her summing up, Claudia Wallis has done more than report the facts: she has presented a point of view -- a perspective that could have a real impact on pediatric medicine. ****************************************************

What is Autism? Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person's lifetime. It is part of a group of disorders known as autism spectrum disorders (ASD). It occurs in all racial, ethnic, and social groups and is four times more likely to strike boys than girls. Autism impairs a person's ability to communicate and relate to others. It is also associated with rigid routines and repetitive behaviors, such as obsessively arranging objects or following very specific routines. Symptoms can range from very mild to quite severe. Did you know… * 1 in 150 children is diagnosed with autism * 1 in 94 boys is on the autism spectrum * 67 children are diagnosed per day * A new case is diagnosed almost every 20 minutes * More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes & cancer combined * Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S. * Autism costs the nation over $90 billion per year, a figure expected to double in the next decade * Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases * Boys are four times more likely than girls to have autism * There is no medical detection or cure for autism

CNN Wants U

On April 2, Autism World Awareness Day, CNN is planning a full day of autism coverage. You heard it right: a full day. To gather content for such a massive undertaking, CNN and Dr. Sanjay Gupta are soliciting public input in the form of stories and questions. Here's what it says on the CNN site: It's your turn to have some of your own questions answered. CNN is planning a comprehensive day of coverage in recognition of World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. The latest statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that at least 1 in 150 children are affected in the United States. In a report called, the "Myths of Autism" we hope to dispel any misperceptions about the disorder and the people who live with it. We also want to be very clear that there is still a great deal the scientific community has yet to learn about autism and its related disorders. Here are some ideas that we hope to address: * Every autistic person has savant abilities in some area such as Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man. Eg: math or memorization * Thimerosal in vaccines is the main cause for autism. * Autistic adults will never be able to live on their own. They will always need assisted living care. Do you think that there are prevailing myths related to autism? What are they? What questions do you need answered? Does autism touch your life? Tell us your story here: Autism iReport
http://www.wired.com/medtech/health/magazine/16-03/ff_autism A Researcher's Puzzles Point to the Differences in the Autistic Brain The YouTube clip opens with a woman facing away from the camera, rocking back and forth, flapping her hands awkwardly, and emitting an eerie hum. She then performs strange repetitive behaviors: slapping a piece of paper against a window, running a hand lengthwise over a computer keyboard, twisting the knob of a drawer. She bats a necklace with her hand and nuzzles her face against the pages of a book. And you find yourself thinking: Who's shooting this footage of the handicapped lady, and why do I always get sucked into watching the latest viral video? But then the words "A Translation" appear on a black screen, and for the next five minutes, 27-year-old Amanda Baggs — who is autistic and doesn't speak — describes in vivid and articulate terms what's going on inside her head as she carries out these seemingly bizarre actions. In a synthesized voice generated by a software application, she explains that touching, tasting, and smelling allow her to have a "constant conversation" with her surroundings. These forms of nonverbal stimuli constitute her "native language," Baggs explains, and are no better or worse than spoken language. Yet her failure to speak is seen as a deficit, she says, while other people's failure to learn her language is seen as natural and acceptable. And you find yourself thinking: She might have a point. In My Language Baggs lives in a public housing project for the elderly and handicapped near downtown Burlington, Vermont. She has short black hair, a pointy nose, and round glasses. She usually wears a T-shirt and baggy pants, and she spends a scary amount of time — day and night — on the Internet: blogging, hanging out in Second Life, and corresponding with her autie and aspie friends. (For the uninitiated, that's autistic and Asperger's.) On a blustery afternoon, Baggs reclines on a red futon in the apartment of her neighbor (and best friend). She has a gray travel pillow wrapped around her neck, a keyboard resting on her lap, and a DynaVox VMax computer propped against her legs. Like many people with autism, Baggs doesn't like to look you in the eye and needs help with tasks like preparing a meal and taking a shower. In conversation she'll occasionally grunt or sigh, but she stopped speaking altogether in her early twenties. Instead, she types 120 words a minute, which the DynaVox then translates into a synthesized female voice that sounds like a deadpan British schoolteacher. The YouTube post, she says, was a political statement, designed to call attention to people's tendency to underestimate autistics. It wasn't her first video post, but this one took off. "When the number of viewers began to climb, I got scared out of my mind," Baggs says. As the hit count neared 100,000, her blog was flooded. At 200,000, scientists were inviting her to visit their labs. By 300,000, the TV people came calling, hearts warmed by the story of a young woman's fiery spirit and the rare glimpse into what has long been regarded as the solitary imprisonment of the autistic mind. "I've said a million times that I'm not trapped in my own world,'" Baggs says. "Yet what do most of these news stories lead with? Saying exactly that." Photo: Jessica Dimmock I tell her that I asked one of the world's leading authorities on autism to check out the video. The expert's opinion: Baggs must have had outside help creating it, perhaps from one of her caregivers. Her inability to talk, coupled with repetitive behaviors, lack of eye contact, and the need for assistance with everyday tasks are telltale signs of severe autism. Among all autistics, 75 percent are expected to score in the mentally retarded range on standard intelligence tests — that's an IQ of 70 or less. People like Baggs fall at one end of an array of developmental syndromes known as autism spectrum disorders. The spectrum ranges from someone with severe disability and cognitive impairment to the socially awkward eccentric with Asperger's syndrome. After I explain the scientist's doubts, Baggs grunts, and her mouth forms just a hint of a smirk as she lets loose a salvo on the keyboard. No one helped her shoot the video, edit it, and upload it to YouTube. She used a Sony Cybershot DSC-T1, a digital camera that can record up to 90 seconds of video (she has since upgraded). She then patched the footage together using the editing programs RAD Video Tools, VirtualDub, and DivXLand Media Subtitler. "My care provider wouldn't even know how to work the software," she says. Baggs is part of an increasingly visible and highly networked community of autistics. Over the past decade, this group has benefited enormously from the Internet as well as innovations like type-to-speech software. Baggs may never have considered herself trapped in her own world, but thanks to technology, she can communicate with the same speed and specificity as someone using spoken language.

MY SON AND ASPERGER'S

Hello All I haven't said much about my son before in here or other sites other than to those that I got close to. I should step to the plate too and let my voice be heard when it comes to what he has. My son was first diagnosed with PDD NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified) when he was 3... more specifically... Asperger's Syndrome also known or referred to as High Functioning Autism. (He Now Has A Firm Diagnosis Of Asperger's Since They Now Have A More Thorough Way Of Testing For This) The Beginning.... My son's first word was 'alright' at 6 months old lol Thought he was going to be an agreeable child.... well being male.. and MY child well that wasn't going to happen. lol. Yes, I admit I am stubborn, and determined... and my Scottish and German roots show strong in my genes... and my son's lol Anyway My son's vocabulary didn't seem to progress as well as we had thought. At almost 3 years old, he was still using 2 to 3 word sentences with 'baby' words like 'te ta' for pizza and 'da dies' for French fries. There were other things too that seemed different. For example: he didn't seem to react to different facial and voice cues. So after a few situations had happened of concern. I called his doctor who referred us to a Child Development Centre. After a few tests found his vocabulary to be a year behind as well as other things like social skills, empathy, etc. Then within the next 6 weeks my son's vocabulary jumped from 40 words to over 2500 words. He started using full sentences. His first sentence was 'My name is Jaren.' He was brought back in for more tests and his language skills had jumped so amazingly high. Sentence structure... everything. He was tested then to have the language skills of a 10 to 12 year old. This was the beginning... Over the last 4+ years since my son was diagnosed there has been a lot of ups and downs... my marriage ended, went to college, moved all over Canada, and have finally settled (for a bit) in the place we are now. My son is an amazing person. So full of life and wants to be accepted for who he is. If you met him.. you wouldn't know there is a 'disability' status on him. You would see him as a happy little (big man) boy who loves to have fun, play, and of course do all the boy things.. get dirty, drive mom crazy, and fall in love with Haley off American Idol lol My son has dreams too of being in the military. Wants 'to be able to help people' and 'do lots of different things' so he doesn't get bored' lol Well enough of my book :P Here is more information on Asperger's Syndrome and Autism if you are interested. This email was sent to me... Dear Krystal There is a lot of curiosity as to the difference between Asperger's and PDD-NOS. This link goes to a page at the Autism Society of America, explaining what Asperger's Syndrome is: http://www.autism-society.org/site/PageServer?pagename=Aspergers And if you want to see the DSM IV diagnostic criteria for diagnosing Asperger's, here is the link. Scroll down to see the Asperger's diagnosis criteria specifically: http://www.autismvoice.com/blog/SignsofAutismDiagnosis Sandra Sinclair, www.autismvoice.com email@autismvoice.com I get emails from Sandra weekly and she provides a great resource to those that would like more info.
