April is Autism awareness month, I like 1000s of others know how dibilating autism can be ... to be locked in your own world as the sufferer is one thing but often the families are forgotten. It is heartbreaking when your own child won't even cuddle you or look you in the eye or show love because they don't know how to or the idea of seeing how others live find the whole thing scary.
I have a nephew with autism and he is now 13 still very much in his own world, gets very upset when he wants to get his view across hates cuddles
There are no cures for autism only by spreading the word and making people more aware will others not stand staring at the 16 year old having a paddy in a busy shop because he doesnt want to leave, he isnt being naughty he is frustrated, angry that no-one understands him and what he wants to say.
Others will know that my son is on the autistic spectrum with PDD (aspergers ) and whilst you may all be thinking thats not as bad as autism i can tell you it is just as bad, they look the same as you and I but they are far from it, aspergers are intelligent when it comes to schooling, they gain A levels but are routine minded, hate change, find it hard to interact with others, often if they are not interested in a subject they will make comments because they dont know about the topic this makes them look rude when in fact they get very upset about it, they say what they think show no tact so often offend unless your aware of this, they often get given the crappy jobs because they have to by law employ them but they ignore the qualifications earned - i have had to work damn hard to get my son where he is he has had a lot of help love and support given but the taboo is still there "oh its autism" please think the next time you see a teenager acting up in a shop like a 5 year old don't judge think maybe that person has autism or aspergers.
