The latest suggested nickname for Ottawas CFL expansion franchise isnt doing it for Russ Jackson. The Ottawa Red Blacks -- or RedBlacks as was suggested on Twitter -- was being mentioned prominently Monday in social media as a moniker for the CFL club slated to begin play in 2014. Neither was receiving much support from Ottawa football fans and Jackson, who led the Ottawa Rough Riders to three Grey Cup titles over his illustrious 12-year career with the franchise, wasnt big on it either. "The Red Blacks, to me, seems to get you to a soccer situation," Jackson said. "I dont know of a professional North American football club thats named with just colours but that seems to be the one thats bouncing around." Liverpool, one of the English Premier Leagues top franchises, is called the Reds because of their red home kits. New Zealands Test rugby squad became known as the All Blacks in 1905 when switching from white to black shorts to go with its black top during a tour of the British Isles, France and Canada. The NFLs Cleveland Browns have brown in their colour scheme but the team is named after former head coach Paul Brown. Unfortunately, the Ottawa club wont be called Rough Riders. A condition of the citys return to the CFL was the new franchise not use the original team name. But Jackson, whose No. 12 was retired by his former club, would like to see the franchise maintain some traditions of the Rough Riders, which operated from 1876 to 1996 and won nine Grey Cups. "Im hoping theyll keep the colours -- the red, white and black -- which it sounds like theyre going to," the Hamilton native said. "I also thought it would be nice if they could maintain . . . the big R that was always a symbol of the Rough Riders on the helmets." Its unclear when the Ottawa franchise will unveil a team name. Time is certainly on its side but the 76-year-old Jackson said a nickname is important because it can establish a teams identity, on and off the field. "I think people relate to it," Jackson said. "I never did like the Renegades (which operated in Ottawa from 2002-06), it never did strike me as something that really hit home for me. "I guess you could pick any name and thered be people whod say it doesnt hit home with them where others would say, Yeah, I like it. Its something you have to grow accustomed and used to. I just grew up with the Rough Riders . . . when you mentioned Rough Riders, you knew exactly what you were talking about." While a catchy team name is important, Jackson said the biggest factor in its success will be ownership. Jackson believes the expansion franchise is on very solid ground financially with Ottawa 67s owner Jeff Hunt heading up the clubs group of owners. "Theyre Ottawa people, theyre not taking this on thinking theyre going to make millions of dollars," Jackson said. "I really think the group thats there now has the money to support it and is really interested." Hunt did not immediately return a telephone message Monday. The Ottawa club is currently interviewing potential GM candidates. The successful applicant will not only be responsible for hiring a head coach but also begin stockpiling players. Ottawa will select four NCAA underclassmen in this years CFL draft, then in December participate in a three-round expansion draft of players made available from the existing eight clubs. Then in 2014, the club will take part in the leagues Canadian college draft. Again, Jackson said its imperative the Ottawa ownership group selects the right GM to ensure the team has a talented lineup when it kicks off play. "Theyre not going to be expected to win a Grey Cup right away but theyve got to be competitive," Jackson said. " Its really important they have someone on staff, whether its the general manager or a scout or whatever, who has that knowledge . . . because I think its going to be really important to get some top-flight players, one way or the other." When the 2014 season begins, the Ottawa team will be the third CFL club to play there. Jackson said this will be the leagues final try to put a successful franchise on the field in the national capital. "Ive always said Ottawa fans are great it was always ownership in my opinion that did them in," Jackson said. "This is it, this is their last kick at the can and they better make it work but I really think they will. "Theyre going to have people in place with plenty of time to look at players and know exactly what theyre looking for and how they have to draft." And Jackson, for one, cant wait for the CFLs rebirth in Ottawa. "Im looking forward to going up there and seeing them play," he said. "Ill certainly be there for the first game." Farmar played in Israel during the NBA lockout last summer and has indicated he may return to Europe. The Hawks also received guards Anthony Morrow and DeShawn Stevenson, and forwards Jordan Williams and Johan Petro, as well as first- and second-round picks, in the deal which became official on July 11.BALTIMORE -- The Kansas City Royals, and Alex Gordon in particular, showed their late-night prowess on a dreary night at Camden Yards. Gordon hit two of Kansas Citys four home runs, Luis Mendoza took a shutout into the seventh inning and the Royals beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-3 Saturday night after the start of the game was delayed by rain for more than three hours. Salvador Perez and Billy Butler also connected for the Royals, who have 14 homers in their last seven games. Gordon has nine home runs this season, three in this four-game series that concludes Sunday afternoon. The game started at 10:14 p.m. and spilled into Sunday morning, finally ending at 1:13 a.m. "Same ballpark, same rain delay, same weather conditions," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "They did a better job with it than we did." Especially Gordon, who homered in the first inning and again in the seventh, taking advantage of the short distance to left field on both occasions. Asked to explain his power surge, Gordon said, "Probably the park a little bit. Take advantage of the places you play and the conditions you play under." Mendoza (6-8) gave up three runs and seven hits over six-plus innings in his first appearance against the Orioles since 2008. Two of his 12 career wins have come against Baltimore. Chris Tillman (5-2) allowed six runs and six hits, including three homers, in 5 2-3 innings. Both pitchers were thrown off their usual pattern because of the delay, but Tillman was the only one who struggled. "Its a challenge. Their guy did a good job with it," Showalter said. "We had two or three times it looked like we were going to be able to start. Then a bunch of cells keep popping up. Its hard to predict, being this close to the (Chesapeake) Bay. Its nobodys fault. I feel bad for the fans that toughed it out that we werent able to play a bit better." The Royals had no desire to play a doubleheader on Sunday or stay through Monday for a makeup game, so they were delighted when the game finally got under way. "We needed to play," manager Ned Yost said. "We have a mutual off day on Monday but we have a charity golf tournament a lot of the players need to be at, so we couldnt stay. We wanted to do everything we could to get this in." Coming in, Tillman yiielded only two home runs in 34 innings this season.dddddddddddd In his only previous start against the Royals, in July 2009, the right-hander also surrendered three home runs. Playing in his third major league game, Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado went 1 for 4 with an RBI double. It was another solid outing for the 20-year-old, the first player in modern baseball history (since 1900) to have two homers and a triple in his first two games, according to information provided to the Orioles by the Elias Sports Bureau. Adam Jones had two hits for the Orioles, who lost for the second time in eight games. After a delay of 3 hours, 9 minutes, Gordon hit Tillmans third pitch into the left-field seats. It was Gordons fourth leadoff homer of the season, the second in this series. Lorenzo Cain led off the second inning with a single and Perez followed with his eighth home run, the second in two nights. Butler homered on a 3-0 pitch in the third to make it 4-0. Butlers career-high 24 home runs are the most by a Royal since Carlos Beltran hit 26 in 2003. Kansas City got two runs in the sixth. After Eric Hosmer hit an RBI single, Jeff Francoeur was credited with stealing home when Orioles catcher Matt Wieters threw wildly trying to get Hosmer at second on a double-steal. Gordon homered off Miguel Socolovich leading off the seventh. Gordons only previous two-homer game was against Minnesota in 2007. Baltimore chased Mendoza in the bottom half. Following a walk and a single, Machado bounced a double inside the third base line before Omar Quintanilla singled in two runs. But with runners at second and third and two outs, Jones grounded out. NOTES: The Orioles unveiled a statue of slugger Eddie Murray in the picnic area beyond the bullpen area in centre field. Murray is the fourth of six Orioles Hall of Fame stars to be honoured with a sculpture during the 20th anniversary of Camden Yards. Statues of Earl Weaver, Jim Palmer, Frank Robinson and Murray have already been put in place, and those of Cal Ripken and Brooks Robinson will be unveiled in September. ...
