PAGAN ORIGIN OF CHRISTMAS

272.jpg

Few people realize that the origins of a form of Christmas was pagan & celebrated in Europe long before anyone there had heard of Jesus Christ.

No one knows what day Jesus Christ was born on. From the biblical description, most historians believe that his birth probably occurred in September, approximately six months after Passover. One thing they agree on is that it is very unlikely that Jesus was born in December, since the bible records shepherds tending their sheep in the fields on that night. This is quite unlikely to have happened during a cold Judean winter. So why do we celebrate Christs birthday as Christmas, on December the 25th?

The answer lies in the pagan origins of Christmas. In ancient Babylon, the feast of the Son of Isis (Goddess of Nature) was celebrated on December 25. Raucous partying, gluttonous eating and drinking, and gift-giving were traditions of this feast.

In Rome, the Winter Solstice was celebrated many years before the birth of Christ. The Romans called their winter holiday Saturnalia, honoring Saturn, the God of Agriculture. In January, they observed the Kalends of January, which represented the triumph of life over death. This whole season was called Dies Natalis Invicti Solis, the Birthday of the Unconquered Sun. The festival season was marked by much merrymaking. It is in ancient Rome that the tradition of the Mummers was born. The Mummers were groups of costumed singers and dancers who traveled from house to house entertaining their neighbors. From this, the Christmas tradition of caroling was born.

In northern Europe, many other traditions that we now consider part of Christian worship were begun long before the participants had ever heard of Christ. The pagans of northern Europe celebrated the their own winter solstice, known as Yule. Yule was symbolic of the pagan Sun God, Mithras, being born, and was observed on the shortest day of the year. As the Sun God grew and matured, the days became longer and warmer. It was customary to light a candle to encourage Mithras, and the sun, to reappear next year.

Huge Yule logs were burned in honor of the sun. The word Yule itself means wheel, the wheel being a pagan symbol for the sun. Mistletoe was considered a sacred plant, and the custom of kissing under the mistletoe began as a fertility ritual. Hollyberries were thought to be a food of the gods.

The tree is the one symbol that unites almost all the northern European winter solstices. Live evergreen trees were often brought into homes during the harsh winters as a reminder to inhabitants that soon their crops would grow again. Evergreen boughs were sometimes carried as totems of good luck and were often present at weddings, representing fertility. The Druids used the tree as a religious symbol, holding their sacred ceremonies while surrounding and worshipping huge trees.

In 350, Pope Julius I declared that Christs birth would be celebrated on December 25. There is little doubt that he was trying to make it as painless as possible for pagan Romans (who remained a majority at that time) to convert to Christianity. The new religion went down a bit easier, knowing that their feasts would not be taken away from them.

Christmas (Christ-Mass) as we know it today, most historians agree, began in Germany, though Catholics and Lutherans still disagree about which church celebrated it first. The earliest record of an evergreen being decorated in a Christian celebration was in 1521 in the Alsace region of Germany. A prominent Lutheran minister of the day cried blasphemy: Better that they should look to the true tree of life, Christ.

Naomi Campell Denies Using Witchcraft Posted in Society January 24, 2007 at 2:21 pm (UTC) Rest assured: Naomi Campbell has no intention of casting a spell on those who provoke her. Naomi has recently denied her involvement with witchcraft. The supermodel has rejected claims she is interested in Brazil’s African-based Candomblé religion, which has rituals some have likened to witchcraft, after claims were made she was seeing a witch doctor to curb her temper. She told the New York Daily News newspaper, “I’m Church of England, Protestant. I was christened that. I went to a birthday party for Tuca Franchini, who is a Candomblé priest. I don’t discriminate against what religion people have. That’s what he does, but it doesn’t mean I have to be involved in it.” The 36-year-old did admit she uses prayer to try and calm her famous fiery temper. She said, “I work on myself daily. I work on my program of meditation and prayer and try to stick to it. It’s important to me. I’m remorseful and regretful. I’m trying to live my life and do some things for charity. I’m taking my punishment, and I accept that. I’ve accepted my responsibility and that’s that. I have no idea what community service I’ll do. Whatever they tell me to do, I’ll do with my integrity, and that’s it.” Naomi was recently sentenced to five days community service for assaulting her maid. Source: All Headline News
A former Starbucks barista in Hillsboro has sued the coffee giant, saying it discriminated against her based on her Wiccan religion. In a complaint filed Jan. 8 in U.S. District Court in Portland, Alicia Hedum said a manager at Starbucks’ Hillsboro Landing cafe asked her to remove her Wiccan cross several times, even though other employees, including the manager, wore Christian crosses. Hedum accused Starbucks of retaliating by refusing to promote or transfer her, reducing her hours and scrutinizing her “minor tardiness.” A Starbucks spokesman said she was unaware of the lawsuit. Wicca, a nature-based religion often described as a form of witchcraft, has been the subject of other employment discrimination cases. A Wiccan member of the Industrial Workers of the World union complained last year to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that a New York City Starbucks discriminated against her based on religion. Hedum worked for Starbucks in Cornelius and Hillsboro from March 2004 until her Aug. 29, 2005, dismissal. Hedum’s suit also accused the retailer of retaliation, wrongful discharge and workers’ compensation discrimination. Hedum’s attorney, Craig Crispin, did not make her available for comment. I Am A Witch

I Am A Witch by Gerina Dunwich I am a Witch With rhymes and reasons. I am a changeling like the seasons. My mother is the Moon, My father is the Sun, With Goddess Earth am I as one. I am a Witch, a Pagan child. Mother Nature's spirit wild Grows within me, Flows within me, Meandering like a spellbound stream, Enchanting my every waking dream. I breathe the air of liberation, I tend the fire of transformation, I drink the water of creation, Earth-magick is my conjuration. I am a Witch of shadow and light, Of Avalon mists and ravens' flight. I am a Witch, with pride say I, For a Witch's soul does never die.

A WORLD WITHOUT WITCHES

A WORLD WITHOUT WITCHES By Robert F. Potts Can you imagine a world without witches, A world with all people the same? Where the only known dragons are hiding in books, And children are terribly tame? A world without magic would be sad indeed. I cannot imagine the pain Of having a world where there's no Santa Claus, Where wizards are searched for in vain. Can you imagine a world without spells, That science and businesses run? And think of the sadness a unicorn feels When he no longer plays in the sun. Can you imagine a world without witches, No elves, and no magical pools? And can you imagine how dull it would be If all that we had were the schools? I cannot imagine a world without witches, A world with no magical wand. A world without beauty, or even a dream, Or a wood sprite of whom to be fond. They say I should grow up and be more mature, Like a normal adult ought to do. But I'd rather, at night, go dance with a witch, And I'll bet that you feel that way, too.

Pratical Magick

To some people, the idea of "Magick" is pracitcal comes as a surprise. It shouldn't. The entire basis for Magick is to exercise infulence over ones enviornment. Magick is an interactive process of spiritual growth and psychological transformation. Even so the spiritual life rests fermly on material foundations. Magick is a way of life and must be lived, and not just talked about, and that includes experiencing the wonders, pleasures, and pains of material existance. The material world and the spiritual world are intertwined and it is this very interconnectedness that provides the Magickal link, the Magickal means for the spirit to influence the material, and vice versa. Magick can be used in ones daily life for better living and in opening doors to new worlds of mind and spirit. Each of us has been given Mind and Body, and it is our spiritual oppertunity to make full use of these wonderful gifts. Mind and Body work together, and Magick s simply the extention of this interaction into dimentions beyond the limits normally perceived. That is why we commenly talk about the "Supernormal" in the connections with the domain of Magick. The Body is alive, and all life is an expression of the Devine. There is a spiritual, Magickal power in the Body and in the Earth, just as there is in the Mind and the Spirit. With Love and Will, we use Mind to link these aspects of Divinity together to bring about change. we add to the beauty of it all-for to work Magick we must work in concert with the Laws of Nature and the Psyche. Magick is the flowering of our Human Potential. Pratical Magick is concerned with the Craft of living well, in harmony with the cycles of nature and the seasons of the Earth. We increase the flow of Divinity in our lives, and in the world around us, through though the things we make with hand and mind. All our acts of Will and desire are Magickal acts.

Psychic Fair

I saw this and i just had to post I know it was from earlier this year but I just ran across it Books A Million To: Books-a-Million President/CEO and Executive Chairman of the Board October 13, 2006, the new Port Richey store manager of Books-a-Million pulled the plug on our planned Psychic Fair which has been meeting there for the last five years! What’s more, she did it late Friday evening, October 13, 2006, hours before it was to happen the next morning. (Apparently in an obvious attempt to ensure that we couldn’t find another place to hold the fair on just hours’ notice!) Please read this petition and, if you agree, sign it so I can forward it to the Executive Chairman of the Board and the CEO/President of Books a Million. Let’s flood this company with many more protests than the measley 150 they received to stop the Psychic Fair! Also, if you’d like to write your own letter (be firm, but polite – we want to present ourselves as intelligent but angry about the situation!), the names and addresses of whom to address the letters is listed below: Sandra B. Cochran, President, CEO and Secretary Books-a-Million, Inc. P.O. Box 19768 Birmingham, AL 35219 also you may send letters to: Clyde B. Anderson, Executive Chairman of the Board Books-a-Million, Inc. 402 Industrial Lane Birmingham, AL 35211 You could also send letters to Alexis Brown, the manager of the store who did the “dirty work”; the address is listed in the opening sentenceof the petition. PETITION IS BELOW: ************************** For over five years our local Books-a-Million store (store #781 at 9570 US Highway 19 North in Port Richey, FL 34668) has supported a small local group. Every month, on the second Saturday of the month, they have hosted a Psychic Fair at the Joe Muggs’ Café in the Books-a-Million bookstore. The Psychic Fair offers Tarot readings for interested people. This is not only a community service to the Port Richey area, but a place for those persons with an interest in New Age or Metaphysical topics to come together, talk, commune and buy new books. Five years ago one psychic reader began the Psychic Fair with a reading here and there throughout the day; now six readers cannot keep up with the demand. The readers are constantly busy from Noon to five o’clock, bringing many regulars back month after month. This fair has really built a sense of community in this area. On Friday evening, October 13, 2006, the host of the Psychic Fair received a phone call from Alexis Brown, the store manager of this particular Books-a-Million, telling the host that she could no longer host the Psychic Fair which was scheduled to take place just hours later (the following morning, Saturday, October 14, 2006). Allegedly, Books-a-Million corporate had received over 150 letters of complaint from a local Christian Fundamentalist group who had just become aware of the Psychic Fair; and, after five years, Alexis had been instructed by corporate to not allow it to continue. If this was truly the case, she could have had the common courtesy to let the event coordinator know a few days in advance, not less than 18 hours in advance, so that an alternate location could be obtained and the Psychic Fair participants could be notified. Instead, the manager called late Friday evening, telling the coordinator she could not show up the next morning! Not only was this spiteful, rude and inconsiderate, it was downright disrespectful to the fair’s coordinators and many of Books-a-Millions’ customers. Many dollars had been spent advertising this event and half a dozen readers were booked to show up for readings. Dozens, if not hundreds of patrons of the psychic fair (also potential book-buyers and café patrons) were planning on attending this event. I would not blame these customers if they chose not to patronize Books-a-Million stores in the future. Books are the same no matter where you buy them. The content is the same, the cost is about the same; they provide the same entertainment, knowledge and enjoyment no matter where you get them. In purchasing books, the difference is the atmosphere of the store, the confidence in the store, the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, the sense of community the store possesses and the vastness of the selection of books to choose from – which brings up another issue. The New Age/Metaphysical section of the store has been dwindling noticeably ever since Alexis Brown became the manager of the store in question. Under her management, it is becoming more and more difficult for one to buy a book they are interested in buying from this Books-a-Million store. She is single-handedly pushing the readers of New Age/Metaphysical books out of this store and right over to your competition. Before Alexis took over management of this store, I wasn’t aware that Books-a-Million catered only to Christian patrons. There are many bookstore chains out there who do willingly carry this genre of books (Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc. – not to mention online stores such as Amazon.com who carry books in ALL categories). With so many other options and after these bad experiences make themselves known, many previous patrons of Books-a-Million will undoubtedly be looking for other vendors.
