| There is a place I have been volunteering once a month, and today was the day for it. I told them in advance that I may have to come late and leave briefly in the middle because my son had an appointment this morning, and I was told that was fine. However, when I got there this morning, I was told (by a different director of the program) to just leave and return AFTER my son's appt was over and I had taken him back to school (which could be an hour or more and the program may be nearly over by then). The woman said she would rather have me do that than to put me in a spot and have to find someone to fill in for me if I had to leave for a bit. I was told, "We need people from the 'top end'." So, I guess I'm a bottom feeder. It struck me odd--doesn't seem like the best way to recognize and retain volunteers. Or maybe they have too many? Seems like you would put whoever is willing to volunteer in a job SOMEWHERE, any job, no matter how small, rather than turn them away. The more pinch-hitters you have, the better. Am I wrong? I've got a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. |
