Here's why I'm throwing a fit every time someone calls the next movie "Star Trek 3". "Reboot" is short for "Continuity Reboot", meaning everything from the past is thrown out. Abrams Star Trek is not a reboot. I'm not out there saying that The Dark Knight Rises should be Batman 8. No character in McGuire's Spider-man caused the Garfield Spider-Man timeline. Nothing from the first 5 Superman movies had any relation to Man of Steel in-universe. But Star Trek is different. The events of the 2009 movie was directly caused by a character from the continuity of the first 6, and by proxy, 7-10. Therefore, Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness is part of the same continuity as the first ten movies, but a different timeline, due to the direct actions of Spock and Nero. Thus, the next movie is the 13th movie in that continuity, not the 3rd in a new one.
