"We often unquestioningly inherit our parents' belief systems. We are also subject to social conditioning from the people around us and the media. As children or adolescents we accpet this, it gives us our sense of belonging, our tribal mentality. "Tribal mentality" alludes to your family, friends, work colleagues, and any other self-limiting group who has a vested interest in your controlled behavioral patters and in the survival of those patterns - which may serve the group but do not necessarily serve you as an individual.
Tribal mentality can lead to arrogance. If our family or social groups belief they are superior to others because of their status, wealth, nationality, or religious background, then we may have been brought up to be prejudiced, hypercritical, judgmental, or intolerant of others who have different backgrounds or beliefs.
An unchallenged tribal mentality frequently brings isolation for individuals and trouble between groups or nations. As we grow and mature, we need to move away from this group thinking and formulate our own values of individuality and independence."
