NY/Billy Joel Trip

Random thoughts on my NY/Billy Joel Trip -  putting together a mosh of thoughts, ups, and downs...

Best way to NY (From DC) - I'm sold on Amtrak - at least if you have enough advance notice to get a decent fare. My tickets were $49.00 one way, it takes less time than driving, and drops you in the heart of NY.

Best Lunch after arriving in NY - NY Pizza Suprema - just steps from Penn Station, and one of the most highly rated (Yelp and critically) NY Style Pizza Places in NY.

Oddest sign - "Keep door closed at all times" - including a chain going through the handle, and wrapped around a ground to ceiling pole. When they say "Keep Closed", they mean it...

Odd sight 1: Times Square Entertainers dressed as the Statue of Liberty - taking a break and playing on their cell phones.

Odd sight 2: New "Entertianers" at Times Square (at least the first time I've seen them) - a couple of young ladies, using what they got - in just body paint and a thong. They body painted patriotic items and "I Love NY" all over themselves - and yes, they had some people coming up to them.

Best Line said to me: By a bartender at Madison Square Garden as I got a beer before the show - he saw my Seahawk hat (yes, I was repping the 12s) - and said "I'm sorry. I can't serve you here. The NFC Bar is on the other side of the Garden".

Worst Service - Uncle Nick's Greek Cuisine for dinner. Maybe I caught them on an off night, or maybe they profiled me as "single diner, low tip, no effort will be given" - The food was great, but the service was a clusterf*ck from start to finish.

Best moment of the show: Tony Bennett joining Billy Joel for "New York State of Mind", followed by Billy leading all of MSG in a round of Happy Birthday for Tony (who turns 90 on August 3).

Concert Grump: It seems whenever I go to a show, I end up near the person that is only there because they got dragged along, and has no interest in being there other than to score brownie points. In this case, it was the guy behind me.

Smartest Move: MSG offering lids for their draft beers. It came in handy as during the show, someone kicked my beer over (and down a step as I was on the aisle). But the cover saved it and not a drop spilled.

Music Bonding Friend: The Concert Grump's Girlfriend - when she realized how into the show I was, she was constantly commenting with me between songs, touching/smacking me during good moments - and when her grump went on a beer/potty run, she came next to me, and made sure my arm stayed around her waist till she saw him walking up the portal again. lol.

Overall - a fantastic trip, and an awesome show. Billy can still sing all the songs and sounds great, even if he can't move like he used to. I would definitely make the trip to see him at MSG again!
