PRINCE GEORGE — A truck driver died Monday after being hit by a tractor-trailer at the Food Lion Distribution Center in Prince George County, police confirmed Tuesday.
Joshua Gilliam, 26, of Knocksville, Tenn., was struck at about 10:30 a.m. Monday at the distribution center on Enterprise Drive, Prince George Lt. Brian Kei said.
Gilliam was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gilliam, a driver for Land Air Transport, had pulled his truck into the distribution center and was walking in the parking lot when he was hit. Kei said the driver of the tractor-trailer has not been charged. He did not have the driver’s name.
..
“(Gilliam) had been inside the building and was on his way back out and he was in the parking lot going back toward his vehicle,” Kei said. “We have reason to believe he was on his cell phone when another tractor-trailer was backing into the area.”
Kei said the investigation is still active so it is too early to be certain the other driver was at fault, but he said it did not appear there was any negligence or foul play on the other driver’s part.
Gilliam’s body has been sent to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy, Kei said.
A Food Lion Distribution Center spokesman could not be reached for comment Tuesday evening.
Kei said the center is normally busy with traffic loading and unloading cargo. He didn’t know whether Gilliam or the other driver were loading or unloading.
The investigation is being handled jointly by Prince George police and the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry, Kei said.
