Katrina..blowin steam...

Today I saw a news report on how the peoples of New Orleans were in such bad shape and suffering from Delayed Stress disorders. The newsman told of doctors needing help to handle the influx of people that were living in what he considered a war zone were the destruction of Katrina still darkens the landscape. There was a 30 something fellow interviewed who told horror stories of living in mould covered housing and seeing how the government needs to send those in his condition money and help to get him into a new home and the neighborhoods rebuilt. Well maybe I’m a bit on the political incorrect side but….. Get the hell over it… I had lots of sympathy after Katrina hit the coast and could not understand why we heard so much at the time from the press all the lives that were going to be lost. I heard the Mayor estimated deaths at 10,000 and I saw a fellow in the bar downtown say he was staying because he thought the government warnings were over blown. The local government never gave an evacuation until the storm was upon them. It was terrible and I wanted to help and donated to the Red Cross. I even thought the fact that those hit in Mississippi with the same storm never yelled and screamed about the federal government came to their rescue. I figured the large city was hit harder and because of lots of people in a small place they deserved sympathy. But after 1,500 fires in California, massive floods in the Midwest with towns washed away, and Arizona burning with 100’s of homes burned to the ground, I am having a hard time feeling anything other than disdain for the people of New Orleans. Not all as I have seen some reports of people taking charge of their own lives and rebuilding, cleaning and not waiting for someone to come to their rescue. I see people in the Midwest stacking sand bags, cleaning the streets, rebuilding there neighbors houses and getting done what needs to be done. It took longer to get FEMA into the Midwest than it did in New Orleans but never heard folks in Indiana yell that FEMA took over 24 hours to come to the rescue as I saw in New Orleans. I haven’t seen anyone in the Midwest yell at a Newsman that they thought the federal government should send every one impacted $25,000 bucks each as I did several times in New Orleans. And now after years I hear that New Orleans is a War Zone and needs millions of more bucks to treat all the delayed stress mental cases that now are showing up at the clinics. It has become clear that the problem was not Katrina but the people that have become dependent on the State for their survival. The catastrophe happened long before Katrina, it happened when the People allowed themselves to become wards of the state and give up the one thing that has always made this country great, Rugged Individualism. The ability of You, the individual person, to take control of your own life and do what is necessary at the moment to help yourself and those you care about. If you become dependent on a government you will do well until that government acts as it always does, as a bureaucracy. It will help some but always after the fact and never completely. New Orleans has become a place where the Dole is the mainstream and when bad things happen the people have become dependent on the state to fix all perceived wrongs. My suggestion to the fellow I saw hoping for the government to come in an build him a new home and give him some money to buy cloths and food. Walk dome the road a piece and get a job picking up crap, building homes and a hundred other things that need to be done. There are people all over the country in the area rebuilding and cleaning and have been looking for people all over the country because they can’t find enough locals to do all the work that is needed. Billions of dollars have been sent to New Orleans and it should be a Job Boom place right now as has been in ever other area hit by disasters in the past. So before I ever donate another dime to Katrina Relief I want to see locals get off their collective asses and show me they deserve the next buck in my pocket.
