Headquarters ISAF
NATO assumed command and control of the ISAF mission on August 11, 2003. Its headquarters structure has evolved from one built around a NATO High Readiness Force (Land) HQ (most recently, for ISAF IX, HQ Allied Rapid Reaction Corps) to a composite structure. Accordingly, ISAF X is formed from staff drawn from NATO Standing HQs and individuals provided by both NATO nations and those other nations that contribute to the mission. The transition from ISAF IX to X was marked by the change of commander, from General Richards to General McNeill, on 4th February 2007.
At full strength, HQ ISAF X will be just over 1,000 strong but the shape and size of the HQ will continue to evolve as the mission progresses. Henceforth, its manning requirements will be met as part of the ISAF Mission Combined Joint Statement of Requirement process. Individuals will move in and out of the HQ on a rolling basis, rather than in large groups as commanders change, as has previously been the case. This should help to enhance continuity. The size of each nation’s contribution to the HQ will change over time.
Troops Contributing Nations
More than 35,000 troops make up ISAF, with contributions from 37 nations. We track individual contributions by each nation but those numbers change on a regular basis due to the rotation of troops. Please contact the specific nations for their contributions.
