Flashback
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the lord my soul to keep
Dreams touch someone far away
And Recaptures rage of yesterday
Remembering pains that were endured
Abuse and beatings never cured
Love is trapped in a fractured heart
Distance and shame sets the child apart
No choice of parents that were assigned
Wrath and anger were not confined
In this woman’s heart there lives a child
A place of blurry thoughts compiled
The flash of scenes is here to stay
Love and peace have gone away
Mommy’s hand raised in the air
Mommy’s hand twisted in hair
Daddy is now bathing me
Please don’t hurt me, the child pleas
Boards and belts on tender flesh
Blurred moments that can’t seem to mesh
Brother crawls into my bed
We cower from daddy with familiar dread
If I should die before I wake
I prey the lord my soul to take.
