Many people are wondering about the motives behind the Palestinian statehood proposal that is scheduled to be examined at the United Nations Security Council in the near future. Some believe that acting Palestinian Authority chief Mahmud Abbas is making the move to gain some concessions from Israel. However, because of the mounting pressure the West and Israel are imposing on the PA, it is doubtful that Abbas, who is also known as Abu Mazen, will follow through with the controversial plan. It seems that Abbas is resorting to the issue of Palestinian statehood as a political ploy to divert attention from the latest internal scandals and controversies, sacs louis vuitton which have put more pressure on him to resign. In fact, Abbas is facing a tough situation in Palestine over his secret negotiations with the Israelis, which sources in Egypt informed the world about after the fall of Hosni Mubarak. In other words, the attempt to establish an independent Palestinian state at this critical juncture could be viewed as a diversion devised to allow Abbas to prevent internal protests in Palestine similar to the ones that have occurred in other countries of the region. On the positive side, Abbas is ostensibly seeking strong international support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. However, his efforts will only bear fruit if he firmly stands by the plan in the coming months. Otherwise, under pressure from Israel and its Western allies, the plan will be aborted sooner or later. The main obstacle is the United States, which once again will rely on its right of veto at the UN Security Council. The Islamic Republic of Iran has some serious reservations about the new proposal, especially those parts that call for the recognition of Israel. But Tehran regards the part about the establishment of an independent Palestinian state as a remarkable achievement for the Palestinian people and as the final word in the longstanding Arab-Israeli conflict.
