Drudry

WHAT IS DRUIDRY? Druidism, or Druidry as it is often called, is for some a spiritual path, for others a religion, and for others a cultural activity. As a cultural activity, Druid ceremonies provide part of the context and pageantry for the National Eisteddfodau of Wales, Cornwall and Brittany. As a spiritual way or philosophy, Modern Druidism began to develop about three hundred years ago during a period known as the ‘Druid Revival’. It was inspired by the accounts of ancient Druids, and drew on the work of historical researchers, folklorists and early literature. In this way Druidry’s heritage stretches far back into the past. Read different authors’ views on What is Druidry?: What does it mean to be a Druid today? Above all else, Druidry means following a spiritual path rooted in the green Earth. It means participating in a living Western spiritual tradition drawn from many sources, including surviving legacies from Celtic wisdom teachings, but embracing the contributions of many peoples and times. It means learning from archaic traditions, from three centuries of modern Druid scholarship, and from the always changing lessons of the living Earth itself. It means embracing an experiential approach to religious questions, one that abandons rigid belief systems in favour of inner development and individual contact with the realms of nature and spirit. John Michael Greer, Druidry – A Green Way of Wisdom It’s an attitude, an understanding, an exquisitely simple and natural philosophy of living. For a great many it is a rich and ancient religion, a mystical spirituality. For others it’s simply a guiding way of life. It is absolutely open and free for anyone to discover. Emma Restall Orr, Druid Priestess Rather than being an organised religion, Druidry offers a personal individual life path that can become part of a modern urban existence as easily as a rural life. It connects us instinctively to the life-giving energies of the earth beneath the pavements, and the sky above the highest office or apartment block. Cassandra Eason, The Modern-Day Druidess What is Druidry? A Spiritual Path, a way of life, a philosophy, Druidry is all of these…Druidry today is alive and well, and has migrated around the world forming a wonderful web of people who honour and respect the Earth and the sacred right to life of all that is part of the Earth. Like a great tree drawing nourishment through its roots, Druidry draws wisdom from its ancestral heritage. There is a saying in Druidry that ‘The great tree thrives on the leaves that it casts to the ground’. Druidry today does not pretend to present a replica of the past, rather it is producing a new season’s growth. Cairistiona Worthington, The Beginner’s Guide to Druidry WHAT ARE THE SEVEN GIFTS OF DRUIDRY? It is often said - usually by those who have not studied the subject - that the world-view and philosophy of the old Druids is lost beyond recall... [but] it is by no means impossible to regain in the present age the spirit of original Druid philosophy. It is essential indeed to do so; for a revival of the old Druidic way of thought, acknowledging the sanctity of the living earth and all its creatures, seems the only alternative to planetary dissolution. John Michell Stonehenge Today our biggest problem is that we have separated ourselves from Nature - so much that there is a risk we may not survive as a species. We need philosophies, spiritualities, ideas, that can help us get back in touch with Nature again - our spirituality must become ecological. Prince Philip, in a speech to a Washington conference on religion and ecology controversially pointed to the direction in which we should look, when he said: "It is now apparent that the ecological pragmatism of the so-called pagan religions...was a great deal more realistic in terms of conservation ethics than the more intellectual monotheistic philosophies of the revealed religions." It now seems that the Old Ways, reinterpreted for our times, can offer us the kind of spirituality that we need to heal the separation that has occurred between ourselves and our environment. Druidry is one such Way, and although at first sight it might appear to be just an old curiosity, a quaint memory from the distant past, if we take the time to look at it more closely, we will discover a treasure-chest just waiting to be opened. And in this chest we can find at least seven gifts that Druidry brings to our modern world: The first gift is a Philosophy:which emphasizes the sacredness of all life, and our part in the great web of creation. It cares passionately about the preservation and protection of the environment, and offers a worldview, which is ecological, geocentric, pragmatic, idealistic, spiritual and romantic. It does not separate Spirit and Matter - it offers a sensuous spirituality that celebrates physical life. The second gift puts us back in touch with Nature: with a set of practices that help us feel at one again with Nature, our ancestors, our own bodies, and our sense of Spirit, by working with plants, trees, animals, stones, and ancestral stories. Eight seasonal celebrations help us attune to the natural cycle, and help us to structure our lives through the year, and to develop a sense of community with all living beings. The third gift brings Healing: with practices that promote healing and rejuvenation, using spiritual and physical methods in a holistic way to promote health and longevity. The fourth gift affirms our life as a Journey: with rites of passage: for the blessing and naming of children, for marriage, for death, and for other times of initiation, when it is helpful to ritually and symbolically mark our passage from one state to another. The fifth gift opens us to other Realities: with techniques for exploring other states of consciousness, other realities, the Otherworld. Some of these are also used by other spiritual traditions, and include meditation, visualization, shamanic journeying, and the use of ceremony, music, chanting and sweathouses, but they are all grounded in specifically Celtic and Druidic imagery and tradition. The sixth gift develops our Potential: Druidry as it is practiced today offers a path of self-development that encourages our creative potential, our psychic and intuitive abilities, and fosters our intellectual and spiritual growth. The seventh gift of Druidry is the gift of Magic: it teaches the art of how we can open to the magic of being alive, the art of how we can bring ideas into manifestation, and the art of journeying in quest of wisdom, healing and inspiration. Life...The Desiderata

written only 50 years ago this set o fverses has such wisdom and truth within it. It is my pleasure to share this with anybody who wishes to read. bright blessings......... Desiderata Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. Max Ehrmann, Desiderata, Copyright 1952.

The Celts

Dont be misled by the wonderful music and images of Enya. Th ecelts were a very warlike and in many ways cruel peoples. They spread across Europe and then across to the UK. There are still a few Celtic nations. I am a mix of three, Welsh, Cornish and Breton. All classified as 'b' celts. There are other nations including Eire and Scotland, both 'a' celts. The native languages are still spoken although I believe that now the Cornish speaking society may have come to an end. Essentially a pagan culture never theless they evolved into an important part of society and many customs still remain. There is a shamanic tradition in celtic society and it i sone which I try and follow. For those still reading there is also a strong movement in the UK of Celtic Christianity. Personally I believe religion is ones own decisin and how we arrive to Christ if not the same as another, is no reason to be called pagan. The Celts have a strong belief in nature and the spirit of the earth. Is it so wrong to see Gods work in the beauty which surrounds us?. Well enjoy the music smile..oh..there is a very strong tradition of music within the Celtic nations, enjoy.

Druidism, Paganism and Wicca While Wicca has earned a bad reputation over the past years of commercial glamorizing of the different sects, the truth cannot be found in a Hollywood movie, popular television series, or in a best selling novel. While these are great sources of entertainment and may even introduce some small samples of truth, these viewpoints are the fictional ideas of executives who have done no more than perhaps read a book somewhere. This is not to put them down, after all, they are only trying to make a living. And let's face it, Wicca sells! But Wicca is not about chants, spells and curses. Wiccans are not evil. In fact Majik is not evil or good. The way that we use our gifts determines the alignment of our works. Pagans and Druids are much closer related than most may think. The word Pagan actually stems from the Latin word paganus, meaning "country-dweller" or "villager". This can be traced to the Roman influence on the British Isles, as many of the inhabitants were resistant to conforming to the Roman belief system. "Pagan" eventually became a term for a non-believer in the Christian church, or one who worshiped any other than the Christian God. Thus, Pagan tends to lean towards the oldest of our factions, Druidism. However, although true Pagans were of a similar belief and practiced many of the same rites, they were separate religions. The Druids were a small number of practicing priests and priestesses who followed their own path rather than that set before them by an influx of other religions being introduced into their society. Shortly after the birth and death of Christ, the persecution of Druids began. Although many Christians and Druids were learning to live in harmony, the few ferverant believers are sometimes more powerful than the many pacifistic followers of any given religion. Thus, it became rather impossible for the different religions to co-exist. Unfortunately, in the long run the Druids were whittled down to a very few. Druids became labeled Pagans as the factions joined forces to keep the ancient beliefs alive.
