But what is a legal steroid? What makes it different from illegal steroids? These questions can also pertain to legal and illegal drugs. The answers are perhaps found in the perception of the specific item, and the easy answer is that the difference is whatever the government deems to be legal and illegal. The differences are also in the results, specifically in terms of side effects. Anabolic steroids often have relatively immediate, and certainly severe, side effects. This can include kidney tumors, liver tumors, jaundice, cancer, high blood pressure, trembling and acne. Corticosteroids can have more side effects, although they tend to be relatively milder. These can include thinning of the skin, depression or other psychological problems, increased appetite and weight gain, water and salt staying within the body leading to edema and swelling, greater risk of various infections, stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, cataracts, osteoporosis, diabetes and others. These side effects can be reduced or eliminated by taking low doses and by following the orders of the doctor.
