One of my best friends calls me once in a while to vent about his best friend (one of my good friends) and his hygiene.
He is an obese man of approximately 400 lbs (not the solid fat guy, but the mushy fat guy, so he's pretty big). It is probably a lot of work for him to bathe or use the bathroom in general.
He has been talked to numerous times about his weight from his previous co-workers and friends. To make a very long story short, he did some dieting but really doesn't care about his weight. He wants to eat what he wants, drink alcohol, be sedentary, live in a messy house, and that's how it's going to be. He probably has depression going on and needs help with that, but he refuses that claim.
I agree with my best friend that our friend STINKS. Nice guy, helps out anyone, funny as hell, but it's so bad that even the smell lingers in our vehicles after he gets out. Friends of friends even comment on his body odor.
SO. Being brutally honest to a friend about a very embarrassing and sensitive topic is not my or my best friend's forte. How do you tell someone you care about that they smell terribly? Do you just continue to ignore it or bluntly tell him? Or do you give an ultimatum (if you don't shower before visiting me, we can't hang out)? Ugh. This stinks (pun totally intended). |
