What are you waiting for?
I remember growing up, being so poor and the envy I always felt towards others during Christmas time. My father was a dead beat dad! child support interfered with his drinking. My mother left alone with four boys, struggled to make ends meet and did a fair job of it. Eight years old riding the bus after winter break was a living hell for me. Kids with new clothes and shoes, my stinky old sneakers would always get covered by my book bag for the whole ride. My jacket always a hand-me-down, was full of holes and the zipper very delicate. Only thing new on me was my sweater, my grand mother new I liked thick sweaters, I could always count on grandma for one of those. The teasing would start on the first day returning to school and would last till mid January. "Jeepers Creepers look at them old sneakers"! I heard it so much in a two week period I would try to match it with music. Kids can be real cruel, and when your the "poor" kid, you become the target of everyone. I even ran away once because I didn't want to go thru the trauma of returning to school. I was found by the police at the local K-mart, they didn't know why I was there but I do. I wanted to get me some new stuff. Now I am running a release property for parolees in phoenix,AZ. We do Toy Drives every year and donate the toys to charities and hospitals!!! This year I am going to try something new, last year we couldn't bring toys to Phoenix Childrens' Hospital, because most of the toys might have contained toxic materials, harmful to children with weakened Immune Systems. I was thinking about starting a fund for the purchase of approved toys and delivering a check to the hospital itself, and let the hospital purchase the toys. I will still hold a Toy Drive for the other charities as usual, but I can't forget about those children either. I can't see children going thru what I had to, Can you? Are planning on donating this year? What types of stuff do you donate? Do you know where your donations are actually going?
