GLENDALE, Ariz. Authentic Vernon Davis Jersey . -- The Phoenix Coyotes limited Colorado to one shot in the entire third period. That was, it turns out, one too many. Ryan OReilly tied it with a goal on that shot late in regulation, then had the only score in the shootout to give the lowly Avalanche a 4-3 victory over the Coyotes on Friday night. "Good for the kid," coach Joe Sacco said. "Hes been playing very well lately. Hes made good progress in his game the last month or so." Shane Doan had a power-play goal and assist as the Coyotes rallied from a two-goal deficit to take a 3-2 lead, but OReillys goal sent the game into overtime. "They had one shot in the third period -- that was it," said Phoenix coach Dave Tippett, who refused to be too upset with the loss. "Weve had some good bounces the other way here in a few of these games against non-playoff teams so they got the bounce tonight." Philippe Dupuis and Jay McClement also scored for the Avalanche in their third victory in the last 17 games, all three in shootouts. "We pulled it out somehow," OReilly said. Colorado is 6-1 in shootouts this season. "I think it was a pretty good effort," McClement said, "probably our best effort throughout a game in a long time." Lee Stempniak and Ray Whitney also scored for Phoenix in front 15,739 on goalie Ilya Bryzgalovs "bobblehead" night. The Coyotes got one point to pull two ahead of idle Los Angeles and Nashville for the No. 4 playoff spot in the West, but it was a disappointing performance, especially against a weak Colorado team that Phoenix had beaten three times. "We werent good enough in the first period but we got better," Doan said. "We should have won that one and we should have won that one in regulation." Phoenix outshot Colorado 16-1 in the third period, but that one shot was an Avalanche goal by OReilly that tied it at 3-3 with 4:31 remaining. Doans power-play goal on a one-timer from his knee at the top of the circle had capped a Coyotes rally that put Phoenix ahead 3-2 with 7:37 left in regulation. Down 2-0, the Coyotes finally came to life on Stempniaks unassisted goal. The right wing forced his way down the ice and scored from close range, his 18th goal of the season, to cut the Avalanche lead to 2-1 with 3:31 to go in the second. Phoenix finished the second period with a flurry of action in front of the Colorado net, all to no avail, including Whitneys blast that bounced off the crossbar. The Coyotes kept up the assault early in the third period, tying it at 2-2 on consecutive shots by Doan, Eric Belanger and Whitney. Colorado goalie Peter Budaj, who had 35 saves, deflected the first two but, sprawling in front of the net, couldnt stop Whitney from his 16th goal of the season. The Avalanche had played the previous night, but they were the fresher looking team from the start. Colorados first score came with 24 seconds left in the first period when Dupuis took a pass from McClement and poked the puck to the left of Bryzgalov and into the net. McClement made it 2-0 with a wrist shot 7:16 into the second period. Phoenix failed in its attempt to sweep the season series for the first time since 1990-91, when the Coyotes were the Winnipeg Jets and the Avalanche were the Quebec Nordiques. A victory in regulation or overtime would have given Phoenix a chance to clinch a playoff spot if Dallas loses in regulation Saturday. Now, the Coyotes, with just three games to play, will have to wait. NOTES: Phoenix left wing Taylor Pyatt missed the game with what was described as a minor upper-body injury. ... Colorado set a franchise record with 420 man-games lost because of injury. No Avalanche player will appear in all 82 games. ... Phoenix doesnt play again until Wednesday night in Los Angeles. Patrick Willis Youth Jersey . Hartsburg and Flames coach Brent Sutter have a long relationship in hockey. OTTAWA (AP) -The Ottawa Senators made a splash in free agency, signing veteran defenseman Sergei Gonchar to a three-year contract worth $16.5 million on Thursday. Gonchar spent the last five years playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins and won the Stanley Cup in 2009. It adds a great deal to our team - back-end mobility, the point on the power play. Thats how you win games in the league now, Senators general manager Bryan Murray said. He was our No. 1 guy. Gonchars agent J.P. Barry had extensive talks with the Penguins, but couldnt come to terms on a new deal. Gonchar says he is looking forward to a change of scenery. Im very happy to be there because Im going to play in Canada, which is pretty special for me, Gonchar said. I believe Ottawa has a pretty good team. ... We played against them last year in the playoffs and its not easy to play against that team. The 36-year-old Gonchar is considered one of the leagues top offensive defensemen. He had 11 goals and 50 points in 62 games last season. With Anton Volchenkov allowed to leave as an unrestricted free agent and Andy Sutton also not being re-signed, Ottawa will be without two of the NHLs top shot-blocking defensemen. However, the Senators now have one of the leagues premier offensive defensemen. From a coachs perspective, Im very excited, Senators coach Cory Clouston said. Bryan mentioned that we put together a list of players that we could potentially go after and (Gonchar), obviously, was on the top of our list. Ryan Grant Jersey. I think he adds a lot to our club. Were sad to see Anton go, but we have to turn a page. Gonchar is looking forward to joining a team that he helped eliminate from the playoffs in two of the past three playoff years. I played against Ottawa during last years playoffs and I was able to see how good they are, Gonchar said. They were close to making the next step and going far in the playoffs and I think I can help them with that. Also, playing in Canada is something special. Every time Ive played in Canada, I always play better and I enjoy playing over there and thats another reason I wanted to sign with them. Murray said Gonchar brings skating, hands and poise that instantly make the Senators better offensively. Ottawa ranked 15th in the league with 2.68 goals per game last season. You need a guy who can contribute offensively and help your forwards because of the coaching and systems in the league now, he said. The Senators were 21st in the NHL on the power play. Gonchars deal includes a no-trade clause. He missed 20 games because of injury last season, but managed to record 11 goals and 39 assists, seventh in the league among defenseman scoring. His 30 power-play points were third most. Gonchar missed most of the season two years ago, but he said he has had no lingering effects from previous injuries. The Senators also re-signed forward Jesse Winchester on Thursday to a two-year deal worth $750,000 per season. ' ' '
