Ok here is the situation I am looking for input on. For over four years I have been a furniture finisher and stain chemist here in the US and have found such a position is taken for granted in the industry here in the US. Most manufacturers feel that a cabinet maker is hard to replace but a finisher is easy because we are supposedly a dime a dozen which is far from true. A good finisher is hard to find.
I have done the work in a shop environment and on site. Here in New England I have done the shop thing. In Louisiana I did it on site and let me tell you that was a mistake to go there to try to get ahead in the industry. That area is nothing but a good old boys network.
So now I am back in New England looking at the fact the shops in the area took me for granted and I am not going back to that.
I have tried to get back into the IT industry which I worked in before the crash after 2000 finding that because I have the finishing experience no one in IT takes me seriously because if I was so good how come I had to go to a blue collar profession, duh the crash.
Now I have to fall back on what I know and both are skilled types of jobs. I am not going back to being taken for granted as a finisher up here and because I went to working with my hands the people who work in IT look at me as a joke so I am damned either way.
I started to look abroad because of this and in Australia both are in demand so much that their department of immigration and citizenship is giving priority to individuals with these skills and a lot of others such as cook and chef a profession I worked to put myself through college. So if I don't have luck as a finisher or in IT I could work as a cook / chef.
If you saw this type of opportunity, had nothing to loose because you lost it all already in the move to the south trying to get ahead would you try and take it?
