Poem

Maybe they say we're young because we're still looking for something special. Maybe it's because there are still things we can't describe with a single word. A thousand points of light spread outward, above the water. It would have been night, but for the moment, in a moving space, the cruise ship beat it back. It was a place as such which couldn’t exist, slicing through heavy ocean air. Spelunking. It struck him… they could be spelunking the world. As we exist we are affected by everything, even if unaware, there is nothing we have not touched in some way. Hello and a smile. “Hello.” He smiled. The old man across the table tipped his head slightly, also smiling. Particularly broad and creased, the dark folds of his face just under the eyes and above the cheeks. Perhaps they creased often; Perhaps a man of smiles. So what else? Back on deck Chinese lanterns swayed easy within the glow; strange because there was excitement. The boy looked down at water, the black and churning back of some reptilian beast. He was a moving building upon some untamed: terrible. Yet assurance, in that, no one really noticed. The night was cloudy, unseen moon hung high. This being the boy’s first moonless night at sea he perceived the change in drastic features. Prior, stars post like trail lights, flickered in and out, the moons face had pressing boldly atop the sky. Another cruise ship had been in the water maybe miles away, but the whole scene had been comforting, like they were part of some grand community, and the ocean, but a stream for sailing. This night though lacked all; it seemed the waters had taken back what was their endlessness. The boy wanted the leave the main deck and head below but something kept him. He was perhaps the only person topside. The fact was, probably, the only person who knew just where he was at all, young as he was, if it was this easy; anyone could be on the deck alone. Though late he waited then: to make sure no one else would find themselves on a night like this and alone on the deck. Leaving below now seemed irresponsible. He became a silent watcher in his own mind, keeping the ocean at bay simply by observing. If watched, ocean couldn’t break the rules. They laughed, holding hands, walking through the empty hallways. Everyone had long gone to sleep so they made their footfalls quiet against burgundy patterned carpets. The halls passed through an archway and entered an expansive lounge. Here long cushioned seats situated beneath windows lined the edges, though the darkness outside made them indistinguishable as such. Giggling as they entered: something about being in a normally busy room, now empty. It was funny; they were in an out of place, mischievous almost. An hour before, in one of the deep and rich floored halls they had separated, she had gone to get a blanket. He had found himself surprised; didn’t think he was worth it. Moreover, he wasn’t sure how to take it at the time. “Wait here” she had said in a much unannounced fashion. “I think I’ll stop by my room.” He said. “Alright, well, I’ll be just a second.” She had responded. When he arrived at his own quarter just down the hallway it was locked, so he returned and waited, somewhat awkwardly, back outside her door. He tried to listen for a moment, not long enough to be rude, just long enough to hear what was going on inside. He heard nothing however and finally she opened the door, quietly, and stepped out. A large flowery comforter wrapped in her arms, they started off toward the elevator.
