Gray Wolf
Moving silently through stunted pine
I slowly descend to the lowlands
My ears twitch to every sound
I seek each scent from the wind
I see the prey that I would hunt
Yet for now they need not fear
For what I seek shall not be here
I know that I must go and wait
For one who comes from rocky waste
My padded feet take me along
Trails known since I was a cub
I climb a rock and lay to wait
My bones and scars ache
After this is complete I shall go
To the Dreamland and become a cub
To jump for the sun and run with wind
A scent, a sound, she comes
I smell the blood, the fear and fatigue
I see the two legs paws bleeding
Her pelts are torn and she tires
Rise, stretch and feel the aches anew
I descend to the trail she must take
Does she speak the lanuage of the people
Will she be as a cub I must teach
I sway my tail and move along ahead
Will she follow or will she fall
If she falls I must wait for another
I lead her to a hidden spring
Drink my fill then lay as she drinks
The bundle she carries speaks to me
Tells me that she is the one
The killing stick tells me this too
She has seen me and knows no fear
She looks up to the place I have left
She looks to where the sun rises
The time has come for me
Dreamland waits for me
I raise my head and she looks
I speak the language of the people
I say what I must
"Go on my friend
Your journey is almost at its end
When the moon splits the sky
And blood pours from your eye
You will see a brother from the north
He will teach you the art of war
Then you must prepare for the twins"
Rise one last time, I am weary
Climb a rock and howl one last time
Let all know that a Gray Wolf leaves
Let Dreamland know that I come
