NEW YORK—An NBA exhibition season thought by some to be too long is now officially shorter this year. Without a resolution to the lockout that’s been in place since July 1, the league officially postponed the start of training camp next month and cancelled 43 exhibition games that were to be played in the first week of the pre-season. Camps were to open Oct.burberry outlet 3 with the first exhibition games starting Oct. 9. Without a deal in place with the players’ association — and with no bargaining sessions planned until next week — there just isn’t time to get things settled and have camps open as scheduled. “We have regretfully reached the point on the calendar where we are not able to open training camps on time and need to cancel the first week of pre-season games,” a league release from deputy commissioner Adam Silver said. “We will make further decisions as warranted.” There was no immediate reaction from the players’ association. The Raptors will lose three of eight scheduled pre-season games because of the cancellation. They were to play in Minneapolis against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Oct. 11, in Grand Rapids, Mich., against the Detroit Pistons on Oct. 12 and at home to Detroit on Oct. 14. With threats of fines of up to a $1 million for public comments on the labour strife, there was no reaction from the Raptors. Despite pushing back camps and cancelling a week of pre-season games, there remains hope the regular season will begin as scheduled on Nov. 1. A resolution to the lockout even in the middle of October might allow for a compressed free agency period, training camp and a couple of exhibition games. The issue remains the league’s desire for a hard salary cap to replace the current soft on and a way to equitably divide almost $4 billion in annual revenues. Various reports suggest the two sides aren’t too far apart on the financial aspects but the union is balking at any imposition of hard cap. There are also questions about how the teams will develop a new revenue-sharing plan and their willingness to share details of it with the union while negotiations are going on. The cancellation of games Friday marks the first time in more than a decade that the two sides haven’t been able to get a new contract before a season was to start. The last time they lost games was in 1998 when the NBA ended up playing an abbreviated 50-game regular season that began in February, 1999. Each team that year played two pre-season games once the lockout was settled.
