Rounders

Hello all or the one person who clicked on this, This is an entry I will call my favorite movies. This weeks movie is Rounders. Rounders came out in 1998 and took in a modest amount of money at the box office. The movie stars the always solid Matt Damon and Edward Norton as collage law student and low rent criminal respectively. These characters are connected by a childhood where the Ed Norton character ("Worm") takes the fall for his friend at a prep school that neither of their parents can afford. The movie revolves around the ever popular card game No Limit Texas Hold 'em. Before this movie came out I never heard of the game but now it's everywhere including ESPN. The movie pulls you into this little known world right from the beginning when Matt Damon grabs his stash from every possible hiding place in his apartment. He is going to make a "Run" at it. He loses and loses big. When worm comes out Damon is back in the game and he has a natural gift to Worm's cheating ways. I'm not sure if it's poker in general that hooks me or just the movie but the director John Dahl meshes in perfect. I love this movie so much that even though I own it when I see it on TV I have to watch it all the way through, no matter where it is in the movie. Maybe it's just the fact that I wish I was as good as the Matt Damon was as cards as his character is at anything in my life. I would love to be able to read people the way he does. The works as a fast paced Drama although there are no actions scenes and most of the movies has it's characters around a card table. The dialogue is fresh and honest and this movies has more than a few special guest stars in it. To me it's like the "Goodfellas" of poker movies.......but that's another story.
