So while getting my first into lesson on mixing vinyl (yep, learning to DJ over here...just call me DJ Elf) I ran across more sounds that I like.
I’ve known that I like industrial and strange sounds in some music. The Skinny Puppy song “Goneja” is a good example of that. Also the theme from the original Terminator movie with the pipes and metal and intense sound. Another song that I was introduced to last night that I have to agree is most awesome is called “Swords” from the Rhythm and Stealth album by Leftfield.
Something else that the last song has that I like is the sound of large drums. That deep, urgent and tribal sound always makes me want to get up and move to it. Kinda reminds me of a heartbeat sometimes, like during and right after sex when you can hear your heart pounding and afterwards when you collapse and can feel both your heart and the other person’s but they are so loud and in sync that you can’t tell them apart.
LOL. I know, odd description but true.
What else?
I like the sound of a slow acoustic guitar. Like in “Whiskey Lullaby” or when my friend Doug plays “Masters of War” for me.
A great bass line will also thrill me. “Brown Skin” by India Arie never fails to make me smile and groove.
I think that’s all that comes to mind at the moment. I’m sure I’ll think of more as I listen to more vinyl this week.
Speaking of which, I was just able to order a vinyl single for a favorite song. If you haven’t listened to “Pictures” by Timo Maas with Brian Moloko I highly recommend it. It has a great bass line and the whole song has this great dirty feeling.
