I would like to recognize these often underestimated, unseen, and unheard heroes. This is for the young women that are waking up at 6 a.m. every morning, laying out clothes and packing three lunches for those small precious children that they have been left alone to care for. This is for the pregnant military wife wondering if her husband will make it home in time to watch their *miracle* happen. This is for the childless military wife, living in a town or on a base alone where she is a complete stranger to her surroundings. This is for the women that feel like a third leg when they go out with their friends and their husbands. This is for the woman that canceled all her plans to wait by the phone, and even though the phone broke up and cut off every time you spoke to him you waited anyway. This is a pledge to the women that cry themselves to sleep in an empty bed. This is to recognize the woman that felt like she was dying inside when he said he had to go, but smiled for him anyway. This is for those of you that are faithfully in that long line at the post office once a month, handling 2 large boxes and 2 small children like a pro. This is for that woman that decided to remodel the house to pass time, and then realized that she had no idea what she was doing and sighed and wished she had a little help. This is for all the lonely nights, all the one-person dinners, and all of the wondering thoughts because you haven't heard from him in days. A toast to you for falling apart, and putting yourselves back together. Because a pay check isn't enough, a body pillow in your bed is no consolation, and a web cam can never compare. This is for all of you no matter how easy or hard this was for you. Our Marines/soldiers/airmen/sailors/coasties are brave, they are heroes, but so are we. So the next time someone tells you that they would never marry a military guy, don't bother explaining to them that you can't control who you fall in love with. Just think of this and nod your head, know that you are the stronger woman. Hold your heads up high, hang that flag in your front yard, stick 100 magnets on your car, and then give yourself a pat on the back. If you are a military spouse or girlfriend or know one... Soldiers come in all shapes, shades, weights, sizes, and states of sobriety, misery, and confusion. He is sly as a fox, has the nerve of a dope addict, the stories of an old sailor, the sincerity of a politician, and the subtly of Mt. Saint Helen. He is extremely irresistible, totally irrational and completely indestructible. A Soldier is a Soldier all his life. He is a magical creature. You can kick him out of your house but not out of your heart. You can take him off your mailing list but not off your mind. Soldiers are found everywhere... in love...in battle... in lust... in trouble...in debt...in bars and ... behind them. No one can write so seldom and yet think so much of you. No one else can get so much enjoyment out of a letter or clean clothes or a six pack. A Soldier is a genius with a deck of cards. A millionaire without a cent and brave without a grain of sense. He is the Protector of America, with the latest copy of playboy in his back pocket. When he wants something it's usually 30 days leave, music that hurts the ears, a five dollar bill...or a woman he can count on. Girls love them, mothers tolerate them, fathers brag about them, sisters support them, the government pays them too little, the police watch out for them and somehow they all work together. You can beat their bodies but not their minds. You can tame their hearts but not their souls. He likes girls, females, women, ladies, and the opposite sex. He dislikes small checks, working weekends, answering letters, missing chow, waking up, maintaining a uniform, and the day before payday. You may as well give in. HE IS YOUR LONG DISTANCE LOVER...he is your steel eyed, warm smiling, blank minded, hyperactive, over reacting, curious, passive, talented spontaneous, physically fit, good for nothing bundle of worry..... And will always be there for you regardless of how long its been since you've last talked.

1. We own at least one artice of clothing that says our man's Military Branch on it and wear it at least once a week. 2. Our AOL/ Yahoo/Myspace/Xanga ect. profiles have something to do with military or have song lyrics in them. 3. We know what the terms Head, Rack, Field Day and PT mean and have no trouble using them on a daily basis. 4. We know the difference between a Recruit, Enlisted, Officer and know the rank structure like the back of our hand. 5. We feel every note of the songs "I'm Already There", "When I'm Gone", "Here Without You", "Proud to be an American" and "The National Anthem" (it is usually one of these songs whose lyrics can be found in our profile, LOL!!!) 6. We watch the news and cry hysterically for fallen Marines, Soldiers, Airmen and Sailors and no one seems to understand why. 7. We just cry.... and cry.... and cry... and cry for no reason at all and we are fine with that!! (It's normal isn't it?). 8. We have at least one (but probably more) family member or friend that doesn't approve or understand our long distance relationship. 9. At the ages 17, 18, 19, 20, 21; we have no problem saying YES to a marriage proposal. 10. Every time there's a bulletin having to do with military they forward it on. 11. They smile when they see a soldier in public dressed in his uniform. 12. They get a little teary eyed when the Star Spangled Banner is sung at sporting events and watching the flag blow in the wind. and the 13th way to identify a US Military girlfriend, fiance' or wife.... 13. They will post this on their AOL/ Yahoo/Myspace etc. profiles for everyone to see.

A military wife that you just met a week ago, already knows your whole story. While a civilian wife you have known forever, doesn't know half the shit about you. A military wife will tell you its ok to cry, lend you her shoulder and cry along with you. A Civilian wife will tell you to keep your head up and be strong. A military wife cries and wishes that she could still be there when she sees the pics that her frend sent to her from halfway across the country. Civilian wives are there to see their close friends children grow up. A military wife calls at least six times to see if you are ok even if they live next door, down the street or thousands of miles away. Civilian wives will call you once a week to see how things are going. A military wife cries herself to sleep everynight for at least a year praying for her soldiers safe return. A civilian wife may be mad because her hubby is going on a business trip for a couple of days. Military wives speak so much about their soldier the others could write a book about them. Civilian wives speak basics about their husbands. Military wives move into a foreign place and pray that they meet someone they can connect with. Civilian wives go shopping and to the movies with their friends. Somewhere tonight a civilian wife is sleeping snuggly with her husband..... while a military wife is sleeping alone and dreaming of her soldiers safe return so she too can sleep in his arms again.
