Make a Difference........

Like me, most of you don’t really know the people we add to our friends list.  Unless we take the time to really get to know someone.  But on a site like this, it proves to be hard.  We all see little things that upset us, and we sit back and wonder…..is this how that person is in real life?  I have seen status’s that make me cringe, and a few that have about made me throw up in my mouth, and some that can be touching.  But on a site like this lately it seems to be more about the “like button”.  Personally, I don’t care what color your name is.  This isn’t high school anymore.  Because if it were, let me tell you some people would have more self respect and be respectful of others.  And that seems to get lost on here in the greed of being Green, or number 1, or what level you can reach.  So on that note, I would like to make a point, and maybe see if I can make you guys sit back and think, and see if I can just get one person to not be so self centered and greedy.

I work in health care.  I’m a CNA and work in one of the largest nursing homes in town.  I’m also a single mother of an amazing teen age boy.  A few years ago when I lived in South Dakota, my son was a Hero to me and to most of my co-workers at the faciltiy I worked at there.  We had a nasty blizzard and most of us couldn’t make it there.  We lived not even ½ mile from there and we went in.  None of the cooking staff could make it in, and hardly any of the CNA and Nurses could either.  But my son decided he wanted to help us rather than sit in the room with the other kids playing video games.  He helped cook breakfast and served it to our 65 residents we had there.  He stood out more than anyone because he wasn’t thinking of himself that day.  He was thinking of helping people he really didn’t know that well.  I was proud of him and I still am, I know he will make a difference!!

We all have been to nursing homes at one point in our lives.  We all see the sadness and the heartbreak it brings.  And with the holidays around the corner, I want you all to think about our loved ones.  A lot of these people are brought to the homes and kinda forgotten.  They don’t get visitors, and some become ward of the state.  They all have wonderful stories to tell, they all were loved during life, and then a lot are forgotten about once they enter a home.  I take the time to listen to them, talk with them and I get to know them.  CNA’s get the closest with the residents.  We know little ways to make each day special to them.  I remember one day at work, I gave a resident a hug and told her I loved her.  She said thank you to me, that no one ever gives her a hug and says that.  And I made it point to make sure I did it everyday.  To see the look in her eyes and knowing someone DOES care.

Christmas will be here before we know it.  And I would like you ALL to sit back and think how wonderful it would be to put a smile on someones face.  Every year I pick a few residents I will buy gifts for.  I would like to do it for them all, but being a single mother, I just can’t do that.  But I buy gifts that are $20.00 or less and wrap it up so they will have something to open on that day.  And to see the joy in their eyes makes it all worth while.  I would like for every one to stop thinking of themselves, to open your eyes to the world and to trully touch someones life.  Make a difference….pay it forward!!  Let them know they are not forgotten!!  They were someones Mom & Dad, someones Grandparents.  I’m not asking for everyone to sit for hours and get to know them.  Even though I think that would be a great experience for everyone.  But to set aside 20 dollars and buy a blanket, or non-skid house slippers, or pajamas.  These people are forgotten about around the holidays.  These people have touched my life, and I know they would touch yours if you choose to do this one day.

So please think about it, think about someone else rather than just yourself.  You would be amased how it makes you feel.  I’m very passionate and have so much compassion for these people, and one day it will be us in there.  And I would rather not be forgotten.  I would want to know there are still caring people out there.  Make a differnce in someones life and trust me, it will open your eyes and touch your heart.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I didn’t plan on it being so long, but it also show me who has actually taken the time read this as well.
