Love

One day at work a sparrow fell out of his nest and I took him home to try and save him. I knew the odds were very unlikely that I would be able to help him. He was almost ready to fly. I took him home and the first thing I did was to get him to drink lots of water. I think I read somewhere that is one of the greatest dangers for a bird is dehydration. I took him to the sink and let little drops of water fall off my finger onto his beak. He didn’t know what I was doing at first but he figured it out and started drinking a lot. It seemed to help him. I then took little bits of raw hamburger meat and rolled it up into tiny balls and stuffed it down his throat. I did this for a couple weeks. It was hardest on him when I would go to work because he would have to go 8 hours without food or water. So in the mornings before I left I would stuff him. I decided to buy him a cage and some seed. I put him in the cage and showed him the seed and after a few times he figured it out. He started looking at me and chirping like crazy! He finally figured out how to feed himself. He got his primary flight feathers and was learning to fly. Every day I came home from work he would chirp like crazy wanting out of his cage so he could come in the music room with me and visit. I would go and sit in the music room and he would fly through the house calling me. He would land on my shoulder and I will never forget the way this little bird would look at me. One bright and sunny Saturday afternoon I looked at him in his cage and almost cried. I could no longer bare to see him locked up in a cage. Something so beautiful deserved to be free! (Love sometimes expresses itself in the form of sacrifice). So I took him out side and said good bye and tossed him in the air! Away he went flying into a tree. I went back in the house and a couple hours later I went outside and called to him and he answered though he had moved off a little further. I did this a couple more times and each time he seemed to move further away until he was gone. As each day passed I missed him more and more. I can’t say how much I loved him. On the third day my Grandmother walked in and said "Chris, your bird is on the front porch!" I went out side and there he was! He looked at me a started chirping! I held my hand down to him and he hopped in it and we went inside. I did this twice and both times he came back exactly three days later..."If you love something, set it free. If it is yours, it will come back to you. If it doesn’t, it never was..."

By the way...He was a "Chiping Sparrow". Which comes from the sound he makes...

"Puff"
